The Flight Of the Kaw |
Part 3 |

About three weeks late, Linka lay in her bed on Hope Island. She had all but forgotten about the Kaw. It seemed that whenever somebody mentioned the Kaw's name, Gaia would tell them to be quiet and change the subject. Lately, the birds had been gathering on her windowsill. Almost as if they were trying to tell her something. Through the night the sounds of their voices would waked her up, and she would look around and see nothing but the moon coming through the window, highlighting the silhouette of a bird that had its wings spread. One of these occurences was especially chilling. A great big bird of prey, like an eagle, flew inside her window. The summer heat forced her to have it open, and she was not afraid of a bird flying in. When the bird landed at the foot of her bed, LInka awoke with a gasp. Her eyes opened. The bird was staring right back at her. Frozen with fear, Linka stood still. Then, the bird opened its razor-sharp beak...and it said, "Kaw." Then it flew away into the night. --------- "Linka! Run, you can do it!" Birds sang as Linka ran across the playing field the next day. The planeteers were playing a game of soccer to keep in shape for their next eco catastrophe. Linka thought that her experience with the bird was just a dream...in fact, the more she thought about it, the less real it seemed. And anyway, she was running. And Wheeler was watching her. She already had enough of a life without worrying about bird queens. As the planeteers enjoyed their game of soccer, something else important was going on... Dr. Blight and Looten Plunder sat in an office in a high rise building sipping coffee. Looking out the window, it seemed there was an unusual number of birds flying about. "So, who is this new business partner you were talking about?" Blight said, putting her coffee down on the mahogany desk--without a coaster. Plunder looked at her strangely. "Her name is Miss Kaw. A little young, but I think you'll like her. She was supposed to be here three minutes ago..." At that moment, a great big bird smashed through the window. Most of the broken glass fell to the street below, but a few big pieces fell inside. The bird landed ona chair and transformed into Kaw. She sat there, smiling, as if nothing had happened. "Looten, my dear friend...your watch is three minutes fast." Part 4 |
