15/01/2002: Penang

Mr Koay took us for a drive around the island of Penang today

First stop was "The Restaurant at the End of the World"
(Where's Douglas Adams when you need him)

With it's view of the end of the world

Then off to view the local rainforest

Around near the hill temple is the Penang Hill railway
You can just see the carriages in this photo.
The railway is in two sections with two carriages on each. They're connected via a cable
that runs from the front each carriage through pulley at the top of their section
(Halfway up, you have to get off and change trains)
This is not a tourist train, it is used by the locals to get to their homes on the mountain.

On the top, they're constructing a new temple

The city of Georgetown with the mainland in the distance

As we descended, we pass the ascending train

Gee I hope they check the cable regularly
