Raymond was born on June 27th, 1957 to Jesse and Dorothy Roberson.
Raymond was born in Middletown, Ohio, as the youngest son of
Dorothy and beloved sibling to Mary, Ronald, Howard, David, Joseph and
Veronica. "Nickie", as the family called him, had a magnetic and
charismatic personality that warmed our hearts. Life of any party and
center of every family gathering, his humor, practical jokes and dance moves
made everyone laugh, eventually . . . even on a bad day!
He was deemed "Nickie" because his birth was timely with the official United States vs USSR (Russian) space competition in satellite launching. The Russians launched the first artificial space satellite that year (1957) and titled it SPUTNIK. Over time, "Little Sputnik" was shortened to "Nickie".
Nickie may have been the youngest son, but his natural talents and abilities were beyond his years. The community of Dayton, Ohio, and Jefferson Township will ever remember Ray Roberson for the point damage he caused on their Basketball courts and Football fields. His athleticism earned Varsity letters in both sports prior to his sophomore year at Jefferson High School, Dayton, Ohio, and each year thereafter at Jefferson and Bishop Monogue Catholic High School in Reno, Nevada.
In prior years, TV Guide Magazine would list team rosters with each player name, jersey number and position and Nickie could recite them all without blinking. The Dallas Cowboys was one of his most favorite teams. He loved football so much, that when the season was over, he would play the electronic set or paper football on the dining room table for hours and hours.
Upon leaving high school, Nickie chose a different path than his peers. Legacied by his brothers, Nickie also became partial to the Marine Corps conditioning. He served proudly and received an Honorable Discharge upon his release.
Although he is gone, his memory lives on within his two sons, Marvin (29) and Antawn (29), and us. Every link connected together will continue to strengthen the legacy of our family. We will ever miss his special-ness.
