Hello everyone. For those of you who don't know, Jewel of Destiny: Gold is a video game, and an RPG if you will, that I'm working on. It should be a really amazing piece of work when it's finished - simply from the standpoint of the care and patience I'm pouring into it. I'm not doing anything fancy, like a custom battle system, or a dynamic plot line... but this is just supposed to be practice, and for a first-time game, I think it looks quite nice.
If you're not familiar with the concept of what I'm doing... it's a bit like Nintendo's "Super Mario All-Stars" where they took NES games and spruced them up for the SNES - or Final Fantasy Anthology where they glittered up SNES games for the Playstation. JoD:G is not an original concept. It's a revamp of Jewel of Destiny by Christopher B. Matthews, where I'm improving the graphics, sound, and story line - plus adding some perks like extra levels and more special moves. Chris is really a great guy, and he gracefully gave me permission to release his story line pretty much rights-free - so long as he's credited, and it's kept freeware. It's also important to note that Chris himself singlehandedly created the entire Toolkit utility I'm using to create JoD:G... So if you like what you see, go bow down and worship him right now before praising me about it.
Anyway... If you're here, you probably came to see screenshots, right? Well, I'm very proud to display them for you. I would like to note that my shots aren't here to hype up the release of the game. In fact, I'm afraid I might just release step-by-step screenshots that'll kind of dampen the excitement of the game - there won't be many surprises... I'm pretty much showing everything as it comes. But that's okay. I'm not here to create hype, I'm here to showcase my skills and pretty much just pat myself on the back, more than anything.
So, to begin... we go to the beginning. You've already seen the startup menu at the top of this page, and here would be the next set of screens you see after starting a new game. I'm really quite proud of this. The original JoD only had a menu window with some text, and had hardly any real history... these shots take you through the new elements I've added, a more detailed story line, and the addition of pictures to go along with the text, that really give it a storybook feel.
I should probably point out, that these images aren't part of any animations or cinema scenes. I wanted the game to have a really classic feel, so they are just still shots to accompany the text that fade in and out as the story is shown - rather like a lot of the NES and SNES games had. I could have made these into animations, but I figured out a good way to fade the screens in and out really fast and not take up a lot of disk space, so this is what we end up with.
The shot on the left, is of what the main menu now looks like with the new skins and profiles installed. Just to show the contrast over the original game, I've also included a shot from the old JoD, to the right.
There are lots more shots to show you, but I wanted to break things up for people with slower modems... so you'll have to click below and go to the next page, if you want to see actual screenshots from the game itself.
