Another disappointing game

(2/27) The Montreal Canadiens came into Philly and handed the injury-depleted lineup another loss. It marks the first time in 9 games that the Flyers have failed to gain even one point. Peter White and Keith Primeau scored in the losing effort. Cechmanek made 10 stops on 13 shots and took the loss.

Desjardins criticizes Lindros

(2/26) Eric Desjardins told the French-Canadien press that he disapproves of Eric Lindros's demands to be traded only to Toronto. Desjardins said, "They want to accommodate him, but it's not easy dealing with only one team...Look what Toronto offered...Have you seen (Nik) Antropov play? And Danny Markov has a back injury and might not play again this year. We'll look silly if we give (Lindros) up without getting anything in return and he goes on to play 10 more seasons in Toronto."

Washburn called up from Phantoms: Divisek sent down

(2/26) So much for Tomas Divisek's first NHL stint. The young winger, who was -1 and scoreless in two games with the Flyers, was returned to the AHL. In exchange, the Flyers have called up Steve Washburn.

Flyers beat Rangers

(2/25) The Flyers snapped a 2 game winless streak by beating the Rangers at home by scoring two unanswered goals to beat the Rangers by a score of 2-1. The Flyers were badly outplayed in the first and third periods, only managing 3 shots on goal in the first 20 minutes and 4 shots on goal in the final 20 minutes. Still, it's the final score that counts, not other stats. Today's Phantoms call-up, Mark Greig, had a big night on the Primeau line, scoring the first goal and assisting on Recchi's game winner. Roman Cechmanek got the win, stopping 31 of 32 shots. The Flyers now have 5 point lead over New Jersey, having played one more game. They are just two points behind Ottawa for the conference lead, but Ottawa has played 2 less games. The Flyers have earned at least one point in their last 9 games.

Flyers recall Mark Greig from Phantoms

(2/25) The Flyers recalled Mark Greig from the Philadelphia Phantoms, their AHL affiliate, today. A former first round draft pick of the Hartford Whalers, Greig leads the Phantoms and the AHL in scoring with 72 points. Greig was called up for 3 games earlier this season. He joined the Flyers organization in July 1998.

Zultek signed

(2/25) The Flyers have signed Matt Zultek to a multi-year contract. He has been assigned to the Phantoms. The Flyers recently acquired Zultek's rights from Boston in exchange for a low draft pick. It'll be interesting to see how he progresses. A couple of years ago, he was considered a stud prospect by the Kings and Bruins.

Flyers skate to a scoreless tie

(2/24) The Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning skated to a scoreless tie this afternoon, with goalies Kevin Weekes and Roman Cechmanek getting the shutouts. The tie was not without its costs, as an already depleted line-up lost Simon Gagné to a shoulder injury. Details of the injury were not immediately available, but it seems fairly serious. Flyers play tomorrow night on ESPN agains the New York Ranjerks.

Flyers call up Tomas Divisek

(2/23) The Flyers called up winger Tomas Divisek from their AHL affiliate today. Divisek has 7 goals and 14 assists in 28 games with the Phantoms this season after missing 30 games with a shoulder injury. Divisek was recently named AHL player of the week.

Flyers blow 2 goal lead

(2/22) A very unsatisfactory performance in Long Island tonight. The Flyers built a 3-1 lead in the first 20 minutes of action, only to lose 4-3 with 17.9 seconds remaining in overtime. Roman Cechmanek takes the loss. Gagne scored his team high 27th goal of the season in the losing effort. The Flyers' other goals were scored by Keith Primeau and Daymond Langkow. The Flyers return to action on Saturday against the lowly Tampa Bay Lightning.

On one good note, the New Jersey Devils were shut out by the Buffalo Sabres. The Flyers' lead in the Atlantic Division is now 3 points. The Devils still have one game in hand.

Leafs call off Lindros talks..for now

(2/21) Yet again, the Lindros trade talks have fallen through. The Leafs' GM/Coach Pat Quinn called a news conference today to inform the press that Toronto was ending its pursuit of LIndros. He refused to rule out a resumption of trade talks in the future. Quinn angrily accused Clarke of providing a moving target, claiming that the Leafs had met the Flyers demands. Clarke responded by claiming that a deal was never close. The deal that alledgedly fell through would have given the Flyers a combination of draft picks, center Nik Antropov, and defenseman Danny Markov for Lindros' rights. According to most rumors, Clarke and the Flyers backed away due to fears regarding the severity of Danny Markov's back condition--and the Leafs backed away when the Flyers demanded a substitution of Tomas Kaberle for Markov. Blah blah blah. Well, Lindros remains the Flyers problem. Time for the Toronto media to find another circus to create.

Flyers rout Hurricanes amid swirl of Lindros rumors

(2/19) 5 straight wins and counting! The Flyers' leading scorer, Simon Gagné, sat out with a lower back sprain, but that wasn't much of a problem as the Orange and Black soundly defeated the Carolina Hurricane at the First Union Center, 4-0. Once again, the first line led the way, as Keith Primeau broke a five game goalless streak by potting two goals against his former team. Mark Recchi also continued his personal hot streak, scoring the game's first goal and adding an assist on one of the Primeau goals. He now as 11 goals in his last 14 games. Todd Fedoruk was the other goal scorer. Roman Cechmanek got the win and the shutout (the sixth of the season). You know, I've gotta wonder--will Brian Boucher ever get another start? Stars of the game: 1) Keith Primeau 2) Mark Recchi and 3) Roman Cechmanek

In the absence of Gagné, Keith Primeau took over the team scoring lead. Justin Williams left the game during the second period with a fractured finger on his left hand. He's expected to miss about 2-4 weeks. The Flyers return to action on Thursday night at...you guessed it...Long Island. Rick DiPietro probably really, really dislikes us now. :)

Lindrosmania continues

(2/19) Meanwhile several major news outlets are reporting that a Lindros trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs is finally imminent. According to the latest rumors, the Flyers will receive young players Nik Antropov and Danny Markov and a high draft pick in exchange for Lindros's rights. The Flyers are known to covet another Leafs defenseman, Tomas Kaberle, but the Leafs have balked at including him in any deal. I'll keep you posted as the situation develops.

Flyers win fourth straight

(2/18) The Flyers took sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division with a 5-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers. Simon Gagné scored 2 goals and 1 assist, marking his 100th NHL point--despite a sore back that kept him on the trainers' table for 15 minutes after the game. His line had another amazing night, as Mark Recchi also added a goal. The other goals were scored by Ruslan Fedotenko and Chris Therien. The Flyers played fairly flat hockey for the first 40 minutes--partly due to the Thrashers clutching and grabbing, partly due to the many many penalty calls--but they broke the game wide open in the third. Roman Cechmanek got the win. The officials stars of the game were 1) Gagné 2) Keith Primeau and 3) Rick Tocchet.

Flyers Down Leafs

(2/15) The Flyers pulled themselves into a tie with New Jersey for the Atlantic Division lead as they picked up 2 points at home against the Leafs. Mark Recchi had a big night, serving up 2 goals and an assist. He was recognized before the game for recently scoring his 600th NHL assist. The other goals came Dan McGillis (1g, 1a; 2nd star of the game), Todd Fedoruk (also 1g, 1a; 3rd star), and P. J. Stock. C'mon Cujo, when P. J. Stock scores, you know you're having an off night! Joseph fell to 3-12 lifetime against the Flyers. This game marked the first of a stretch of 13 of 15 games at home coming up for the Flyers. The Flyers were 0-5 on the powerplay.

Flyers Beat Islanders...Again

(2/14) The Flyers picked up another 2 points in Long Island, with goals scored by Rick Tocchet, Mark Recchi, and Simon Gagné. Roman Cechmanek got the win, while John Vanbiesbrouch took the loss. The three stars of the game were the Flyers' dominant top line: 1) Mark Recchi 2) Simon Gagné and 3) Keith Primeau. Doesn't it make you think, "Eric who?"

The Flyers return to action tomorrow night at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hmm... wanna bet it'll be another Lindros media circus?

Flyers Acquire Rights For Matt Zultek

(2/13) In a minor trade, the Flyers acquired the rights of Matt Zultek from the Boston Bruins in exchange for a ninth round draft pick. Zultek was originally drafted #15 overall in 1997 by the L.A. Kings, having played with former Flyer Dainius Zubrus (remember him?) in Jr. B, and re-entered the draft in 1999, having failed to come to terms with the Kings. In 1999, he was drafted in the second round by the Bruins and missed training camp with a knee injury. He played four seasons with the Ottawa 67s of the OHL and scored the winning goal for them in the 1999 Memorial Cup. Zultek's physically huge--6'4 and 222 lbs--but some scouts think he doesn't use his size well. The Flyers will presumably try to get him signed and settled with the Phantoms.

Flyers beat the Islanders, 5-2

(2/9) Ah, the Islanders. Solution for all of the Flyers' woes. Roman Cechmanek and the Flyers get another win in Long Island, this one by the score of 5-2. The goals were scored by Simon Gagné, Dan McGillis, Daymond Langkow, Jody Hull, and Ruslan Fedotenko.

Flyers lose 2 quick games

(2/7) The Flyers are starting the second half with a whimper--falling 3-4 to Boston and being whipped 4-9 by Pittsburgh. Brian Boucher was shaky in Boston and in relief for Roman Cechmanek in Pittsburgh. The Flyers continue their 4 game road trip against the Islanders on Friday night.

Gagné and Cechmanek go to the All-Star Game

Simon Gagné and Roman Cechmanek represented the Flyers at the 51st Annual NHL All-Star Game. Gagné had a weekend to remember: anchoring the winning N. American puck-relay team (which included his hero, Joe Sakic), getting a locker next to Mario Lemieux, playing on a line with Mario Lemieux, scoring a goal with the help of Brett Hull and Mario Lemieux, getting the puck from his goal with the help of Mario Lemieux, and generally being recognized as a superstar in the making. Cechmanek had less luck, being lit up at the skills competition and the actual game alike.
