(11/29) The Flyers rallied from a two goal deficit against the Boston Bruins only to fall in overtime. Marty Murray started the comeback with a goal off assists from Simon Gagne and Justin Williams. Later Mark Recchi, who had been battling the flu and benched for the first part of the third period, scored the game-tying goal off assists from Primeau and LeClair. There was one scary moment for the Flyers in the last seconds off the first period, when Bruins defenseman Don Sweeney laid a knee-on-knee hit on Simon Gagne, who had to be helped off the ice. Fortunately, Gagne was able to return for the second period of play. The Flyers return to action on Saturday versus the Tampa Bay Lightning.
(11/25) The Flyers' defensive lapses proved costly tonight, as the orange and black managed to drop a game to the stumbling Vancouver Canucks. Simon Gagne scored the only goal for the Flyers, when a rebound bounced off his chest and into the goal. Roman Cechmanek had the start and the loss. The loss marks the end of the Flyers' four game unbeaten streak.
(11/23) The fourth line got the job done tonight, but not many other Flyers could say the same after they came away from Dallas with just one point for their efforts. The Flyers had a one-goal lead three times--including late in the third period--and twice they gave it away. The fourth line had a good game marked by the return of Kent Manderville from injury and Barber's healthy scratch list. Manderville and Ranheim scored the Flyers' second and third goals. Simon Gagne also scored for the Flyers, joining John LeClair as the only Flyers in double-digits for goals. The Flyers return to action on Sunday against Vancouver.
(11/21) The Flyers got lucky tonight in Philadelphia, as they escaped with a point despite being seriously outplayed by the slumping Devils. Justin Williams and John LeClair (2) scored the Flyer goals. Hopefully this means the Roenick line is back on track offensively.
(11/17) The Flyers may have failed to end one winless streak this season when they blew a late lead in Detroit, but they killed a similar streak this afternoon in New Jersey. For the first time in eleven games, the Flyers traveled up the turnpike and came away with a victory thanks to three young wingers. The Flyers were outplayed in the first period, but they took an early lead in the second period on a Jan Hlavac goal assisted by Kim Johnsson. The Devils evened things up with a Bobby Holik goal after a flurry on Roman Cechmanek, and the second period ended in a 1-1 tie. Just 0:41 into the third period, however, the Devils forgot to cover Simon Gagne beside their goal and they paid the price. Keith Primeau and Mark Recchi assisted on the goal, which ties Gagne with John LeClair for the team lead in goals at nine. After this goal, the Devils' defense continued to break down. A few minutes later, they coughed up the puck at center ice, and Ruslan Fedotenko converted on the golden opportunity for his fourth of the season. Roman Cechmanek held off the Devils' best efforts for the rest of the game to secure the victory.
(11/17) Chris Therien's injury and Jiri Dopita's return merely hastened the inevitable for Pavel Brendl. The young winger acquired in the Eric Lindros was sent down to the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms, while Bruno St. Jacques was called up in his place. Brendl's impressive preseason was followed by a lackluster regular season--partially due to an injury to his ankle. As for St. Jacques, he had a solid training camp but was pushed back to the Phantoms due to numbers reasons. This is his second callup of the young season.
In other player movement news, veteran minor league goalie Neil Little was called up to backup Roman Cechmanek while Boucher is sidelined by his injury. Little has frequently been called up by the Flyers, but he has yet to play a single minute in an NHL game. Little has been splitting time with top prospect Maxime Ouellet in the AHL this season.
(11/15) The Flyers' big guns got the job done tonight at home against Washington. Keith Primeau, Jiri Dopita, and Mark Recchi all scored within the first four minutes of the game to lead the Flyers to a 5-0 victory. Dopita scored on the Flyers first power play, and Recchi tapped in a Primeau rebound shorthanded for his tally. John LeClair and Simon Gagne scored the other goals for the Flyers. It was a costly victory in many respects. Brian Boucher left in the second period with a strained hamstring. Roman Cechmanek was perfect in relief of Boucher, as the two goalies combined for the shutout. The other casualty of the night was Chris Therien, who sustained a concussion in the first period. He's out for at least the next five days.
(11/14) Sigh. The Flyers stormed a two-goal comeback in the third period on beautiful goals by Jan Hlavac and Jeremy Roenick, only to lose it all at the end. To make it that much worse, Eric Lindros scored one of the Rangers' goals. The Flyers will sure have a lot to prove when they face the Rangers again--this time in Philly--in January.
(11/13) Jiri Dopita's return and Luke Richardson's exit have led to some player shuffles in Flyerland. Tomas Divisek was returned to the Phantoms, and in his place the team called up Francis Lessard. Lessard is a bruising defenceman best known for giving Eric Lindros a concussion during a "non-contact" drill.
(11/10) Flyers 3, Panthers 2 (OT). My two favorite Flyers both had big games in Florida tonight to lead the Flyers to a 3-2 overtime victory. Gagne scored twice in regulation, once on the power playf, to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead through three periods. Mark Recchi and Eric Desjardins assisted on both goals. The Flyers' penalty coughed up a 2-1 lead early in the third, forcing the extra session. Skating 4 on 4, with less than a minute remaining, John LeClair netted a very pretty unassisted marker that gave the Flyers the extra point. Brian Boucher was in net, making 16 saves on 18 shots.
Notes: Paul Laus' shorthanded goal for Florida in the first period actually went in off Dan McGillis's stick after a Desjardins turnover. . . . Gagne and Recchi may be clicking, but Primeau's still hitting posts. . . . The Divisek line looked quite good--when it actually got a rare shift. . . . Gagne's power play goal may have broke the Flyers 1 for 29 experiment in man advantage futility, but the Flyers' special teams still looked dreadful. . . .Justin Williams was a healthy scratch for the first time this season. . . . The Flyers have three important conference matchups up next: at New York on Wednesday (why hello Eric!), at home against Washington on Thursday, and at New Jersey on Saturday. Should be interesting!
(11/8) Brian Boucher's stellar goaltending and Tomas Divisek's first NHL goal allowed the Flyers to notch their first one-goal win of this young season. The lone Tampa Bay goal actually went through the webbing of Boucher's glove--otherwise, he would have had a shutout. Ruslan Fedotenko scored the other Flyer goal.
Once again the flat Flyers offense proved costly for the orange and black. The resurgent Blackhawks scored the go-ahead goal during a Justin Williams penalty and held on to the lead for the rest of the game. Keith Primeau scored the first and only Flyers goal--his first of the season, in fact. Roman Cechmanek got the start and the loss. As on Saturday night, the Flyers' power play couldn't connect at all.
(11/5) Despite the Flyers' loss to the Islanders, the powers that be of the NHL decided that Brian Boucher's week was still award worthy. Boucher made history by being the first Flyers goaltender to notch shutouts in back-to-back nights. (The team had accomplished the feat before but only when using two goaltenders.) For the week, Boucher was 2-1 with a 0.67 GAA. Boucher currently leads the league with his 1.64 GAA and .943 save percentage. To which I simply say, "BOOSH!"
(11/5) The Flyers have recalled forward Tomas Divisek from the Philadelphia Phantoms. Divisek has six points in ten games with the Phantoms this season, but he was scoreless in a two-game stint with the Flyers last season. Meanwhile, defenseman Bruno St. Jacques was returned to the AHL, as both Eric Weinrich and Eric Desjardins are expected to return to the lineup on Tuesday.
(11/3) The Flyers failed to convert on a 5 on 3 power play late in the third period as they lost to the Atlantic Division leading Islanders by a score of 1-2. The Flyers scored first and early, as Recchi got a goal at 2:41 of the first period on an assist by Simon Gagne. That was it for the Flyer offense for the night, however. Brian Boucher took the loss.
