Skills

This section of the Online Campaign Sourcebook discusses specific rules regarding the use of skills within the campaign.

The Known Lands campaign setting uses the following general conventions in regards to skills:

Specific aspects of the following skills are addressed:

Designation Of Open Game Content: All game mechanics found on this page, including the names of races, classes, prestige classes, feats, spells and powers, are designated as Open Game Content under the Open Gaming License. Non-game related material, such as descriptive text, is not considered Open Game Content.

General: Opposed Checks

In general, when player-characters must make an opposed skill check, as this campaign uses the Players Roll All The Dice alternate rule, all opposed skill checks are made against the following DC instead:

10 + target's opposed skill check bonus + situational modifier(s)

Balance

When determining the DC of a Balance check on a narrow surface for creatures other than Medium size, half the measurements for each step below Medium and double the measurements for each step above Medium. (Storm Giants should have a harder time balancing as they walk on a 12-inch wide beam than diminutive white mice on the same beam.)

Bluff

In order to convince someone of something the character believes to be false, they must make a Bluff check against the following DC:

10 + target's Sense Motive skill check bonus + current attitude modifier + situational modifier(s)

The current attitude modifier is determined as follows:

Here are some broad guidelines for use in determining appropriate situational modifier(s):

Concentration

When Concentration is used to avoid triggering attacks of opportunity, as detailed under Special, use the following dynamic DC to determine the difficulty to do so:

Task: You can use Concentration to cast a spell, use a spell-like ability, or use a skill defensively, so as to avoid attacks of opportunity altogether. This doesn’t apply to other actions that might provoke attacks of opportunity.
DC: Target's Reflex Save Score + spell or power level (if applicable)

If the Concentration check succeeds, you may attempt the action normally without provoking any attacks of opportunity. A successful Concentration check still doesn’t allow you to take 10 on another check if you are in a stressful situation; you must make the check normally. If the Concentration check fails, the related action also automatically fails (with any appropriate ramifications), and the action is wasted, just as if your concentration had been disrupted by a distraction.

A character with the Combat Casting feat gets a +4 bonus on Concentration checks made to cast a spell or use a spell-like ability while on the defensive or while grappling or pinned.

Diplomacy

In order to convince someone of something the character believes to be true, they must make a Diplomacy check against the following DC:

10 + target's Diplomacy skill check bonus + current attitude modifier + situational modifier(s)

The current attitude modifier is determined as follows:

Here are some broad guidelines for use in determining appropriate situational modifier(s):

Hide

This skill is being replaced by Stealth. Any references to the Hide skill in the normal rules now indicate the Stealth skill instead.

Listen

This skill is being replaced by Perception. Any references to the Listen skill in the normal rules now indicate the Perception skill instead.

Move Silently

This skill is being replaced by Stealth. Any references to the Move Silently skill in the normal rules now indicate the Stealth skill instead.

Perception (Wis)

This skill replaces the Listen and Spot skill checks. Whenever the Listen and Spot skills are referenced in the normal rules, substitute the Perception skill instead. Perception is a Wis-based skill, and can be used untrained.

Psicraft

This skill is being replaced by Spellcraft. Any references to the Psicraft skill in the normal rules now indicates the Spellcraft skill instead.

Spellcraft

In addition to its normal uses, this skill also replaces the Psicraft skill. Whenever the Psicraft skill are referenced in the normal rules, substitute the Spellcraft skill instead.

Unfamiliar Magic: Due to a lack of extensive training, the DC for any Spellcraft checks involving a form of magic (arcane, divine or psionic) that the character is not capable of performing increases the DC of the skill check by +10.

Spot

This skill is being replaced by Perception. Any references to the Spot skill in the normal rules now indicate the Perception skill instead.

Stealth (Dex)

This skill replaces the Hide and Move Silently skill checks. Whenever the Hide and Move Silently skills are referred to in the normal rules, substitute the Stealth skill instead. Stealth is a Dex-based skill, and can be used untrained.

Survival

In addition to its normal uses, the Survival skill is used to avoid wilderness encounters, due to the character's ability to evade wilderness creatures, pick out well-hidden paths and avoid creatures' hunting grounds.

Task: To avoid wilderness encounters.
DC: 15 + situational modifier(s)

Here are some broad guidelines for use in determining appropriate situational modifier(s):

Results are determined as below:

Tumble

Instead of the static DCs for avoiding attacks of opportunity, use the following dynamic DCs instead:

Task: Tumble at one-half speed as part of normal movement, provoking no attacks of opportunity while doing so. Failure means you provoke attacks of opportunity normally. Check separately for each opponent you move past, in the order in which you pass them (player’s choice of order in case of a tie). Each additional enemy after the first adds +2 to the Tumble DC.
DC: Target's Reflex Save Score

Task: Tumble at one-half speed through an area occupied by an enemy (over, under, or around the opponent) as part of normal movement, provoking no attacks of opportunity while doing so. Failure means you stop before entering the enemy-occupied area and provoke an attack of opportunity from that enemy. Check separately for each opponent. Each additional enemy after the first adds +2 to the Tumble DC.
DC: Target's Reflex Save Score+10

Use Magic Device

In addition to its normal uses, this skill also replaces the Use Psionic Device skill. Whenever the Use Psionic Device skill are referenced in the normal rules, substitute the Use Magic Device skill instead.

Use Psionic Device

This skill is being replaced by Use Magic Device. Any references to the Use Psionic Device skill in the normal rules now indicate the Use Magic Device skill instead.
