Anything Goes

Anything Goes

The great beings of Paramount may own the characters--but not my thoughts and opinions.
Sue Love was the creator and originator of this *wonderful disease* called writing logs.
No one else wrote logs about this scenario.

Dateline:

It was reported that the house of Admiral Kathryn Janeway and Ambassador Chakotay had been robbed earlier last month. The couple have been visiting the planet Vulcan. Family members say that several items are definitely missing, but until the couple returns home later next month, a complete list is not available.

The private logs of Kathryn Janeway--published without the permission of the owner or any of the persons mentioned.

ANYTHING GOES:

OK, I'll admit it. I've never really enjoyed historical musical comedies, especially those from the early 20th century. So when Neelix came to me a month ago and said he wanted to do a production of 'Anything Goes,' I had no idea what it was--but I gave him permission.

Since being stranded out here, there have been several theater productions. I know Neelix has really enjoyed the productions. So I wasn't surprised that he would want to get involved, just at his choice.

I didn't give it much thought until yesterday morning. I was passing shuttle bay 2 (which has been converted to a theater) and peaked in. It was incredible. Harry was conducting and playing his clarinet: but more astonishing, Kes can sing, I guess she is playing the romantic lead, she was singing this charming duet with Ensign Jones from Stellar. Later, I looked up the plot and had to laugh. I think Neelix must have picked it on purpose. From what I saw, I think he is updating it to be more relevant to our situation. It may adapt too well. I'm looking forward to it a lot more than I thought I would be.

I had dinner with Chakotay yesterday evening and described what I had seen. He had seen another scene the day before. Jenny Delaney is also in it. He had also worked with Neelix, on some of the scenery.

That was something I had learned on New Earth, his love of building. He had such plans when we were *rescued:* a boat; a major addition to the house; a storage shed; a building for my tub. I remember not liking being there, struggling with my feelings on our illness, and my feelings for him. But I miss it. The sense of not being responsible to or for anybody but ourselves, and no schedules.

We danced for a while after dinner: he selected music from the upcoming show. There was one I particularly liked--a lovely love song called 'All Through the Night.' That was the song I'd heard Kes and Jones singing. The words matched my mood completely.

He didn't leave that night.

Two cups of coffee already this morning, and I have a meeting with the Physics department in half-an-hour. I'd better stop humming that tune, or Tom will start smiling. Insufferable kid.

Or worse, Chakotay will start smiling, and then I'll start smiling.

Admiral Kathryn Janeway, recently retired from Star Fleet, spends her free time with their family, their 4 dogs, and friends from her long service in Star Fleet. That's when she is not traveling with her partner, her lover, Ambassador Chakotay on his missions.

All the usual disclaimers apply. The characters may belong to Paramount, but what they do between episodes, between scenes, and in my rather dangerous mind are my concern. This is, after all, my alternate universe. A special thanks to Sue Love, whose idea it was to start the logs.

Captain Harry Kim, late of the Questor has kindly given me permission to publish selections from his logs.

ANYTHING GOES

Why did I volunteer to do this. Three days to opening, and I'm exhausted. Two days of response drills on the bridge followed by rehearsal. I need to remind myself not to do this again.

It has been fun though, watching our little band of actors and technicians create this show from nothing. I would never have thought of Neelix as a director. But I shouldn't compare this to his food. We are actually not bad at all. There's a lot of talent on this ship. I was delighted with Jenny as Reno. She can belt out those songs. (She told me the other day, that if she hadn't gone into Starfleet, she would have chosen a career as a singer.) My little orchestra is pretty good too. We had to modify the music somewhat because of our limited players, but overall not bad. And I'm not speaking with a biased view.

Neelix has done some updating of the script. Which is just as well, there are so many references to the early 20th century--the show is incredibly dated. Actually he's done more than update. It's been rewritten, he had Ensign Stein from Engineering rewrite it completely. She did a good job. It still takes place on a ship (400 years ago they sailed on Earth's oceans), but now it takes place on a Federation Transport Ship operating between Risa and Earth. It's actually quite funny.

When I asked Neelix why he decided to do "Anything Goes," as opposed to something more recent--he said that was my fault. When I had him monitoring the media broadcasts (when we orbited 1996 Earth), he and Kes had seen excerpts from an LA theater group production and had both enjoyed it. He found the script in Voyager's computer, then asked me if I wanted to be music director. And like an idiot, I said yes.

Well, in less than a week the show will be over and I can retire. And catch up on everything I'm behind on. The Captain has graciously allowed my monthly report to be late. I've been working on it during what little *free-time* I can find.

Speaking of the Captain, I saw her look in yesterday morning. Kes and Ensign Jones were singing. I didn't have a chance to watch her as I was concentrating on the music. She left before we'd finished.

But this morning the Captain was humming that song, with a secret little smile on her face. Tom, of course, noticed. He smiled at me quickly during the morning briefing. We both watched the Commander too. He was trying to avoid looking at her, every time he did, he smiled too.

Must have been some night.

ANYTHING GOES: OPENING NIGHT:

More of the Anything Goes story.

It's here, in less than an hour we open. The butterflies in my stomach are overwhelming. I think I would rather face the Kazon again. That doesn't involve the incredible nervousness I'm feeling right now. I knew I shouldn't have agreed to this.

It's been so long since I've performed for a real audience. Over the past couple of years I've practiced, I can now usually hit the high A in the Mozart, I've even programmed the holodeck with a small orchestra and audience. But if...

Stop it Harry. You'll do fine, remember what your clarinet teacher, Ms...I can't even think of her name. Ms Veronica Hoyt, that's it. I studied with her until I went to the academy. She told me to relax and concentrate. And think positive.

Relax and concentrate. Hard to do.

There's Neelix, his voice is pitched an octave higher tonight. He may be the one person more nervous than myself tonight. He's motioning for me to join them.

Relax and concentrate.

~

It's late, I've just returned from the opening night party. It went well. I don't think most of our audience realized that Ensign Jones skipped a paragraph of dialogue early in the first act, fortunately it was covered well. I squeaked once. That was embarrassing, and we almost missed a cue. I might be willing to do this again.

Harry, you promised yourself, never again.

I know, but it was a lot of fun. I forgot the thrill of performance, the feeling in one's heart as one plays. Just the incredible joyfulness of the whole thing. And of course the feeding of the ego.

The party was pretty good too. Somehow Neelix found time to cater that as well as direct. I don't think I've ever seen Neelix this bubbly. He was so incredibly cheerful--much more than normal. He's already planning his next show. I think he is assuming I'll be the music director of that one too. Except from some of his conversation, I think he is dreaming big. I overheard him asking the Doc if he wanted to sing in public.

The party and opening night weren't formal affairs, but only a couple of people showed up in uniform. More and more, the crew are not wearing their uniforms off duty.

Even the Captain and Commander. She looked stunning in the dark-blue dress she wore this evening. I'm not sure Tom is able to speak yet. There was dancing at the party, and she agreed to dance with him. One dance and Tom was speechless. I don't think I've ever seen him in that state before. Then B'Elanna danced with him. That left him stunned. But not for long. He ended up dancing with most of the women--though B'Elanna did dance a second time with him. That was surprising.

The Captain stopped by to offer her congratulations and compliments. She really had enjoyed the show--her eyes were sparkling. I would have asked her to dance--but didn't. She's still the Captain. Anyway, I don't want to get on the Commander's bad side. They then danced several dances before leaving, together.

I left soon afterwards, the party was starting to get a little wild. Well as wild as you can get on a starship lost in the middle of no where. But for a short while we forgot where we are.

Tomorrow is reality. I'll spend a little time tonight finishing my report.

We've one more performance--the day after tomorrow.

I hope I survive.
