Skies of Arcadia: Legends

Review by: Ninja_Marche

This game has got to be one of the greatest 'cube RPGs out there. Of course that's not saying much, since there are only about 10 or so in existence. That's beside the point though. This is a great game. You play as Vyse (pronounced vice... I think), an air pirate with big dreams. The game starts out on a raid of an imperial ship, kind of like a new age robin hood. You get to the helm of the ship and find an evil man with a giant robot waiting to kill you (what a surprise!). After you defeat him, he escapes and destroys the ship. You manage to get off of it, of course and you rescue the girl they had held captive. In traditional RPG sense, she is a descendant of a lost culture and has little memory of herself. The rest of course, you’ll have to play to find out. Skies of Arcadia also uses a unique battle system. It is straight-up turn based action, but there are more elements to it than that. First of all is the spirit point meter. Instead of using MP, special skills and spells are charged to the SP meter, which recharges some at the beginning of every turn. Another cool addition is the element factor. Based on which element you have equipped to your weapon you'll learn different spells. Like if you had a fire element on your weapon, you would learn fire spells only. The elements can be changed on the fly during your turn and there are 6 in all. Overall the story is a bit cliché, but enthralling making you want to find out what happens next. The graphics aren't all that impressive, but it looks pretty good for an early 'cube game (and being a port from the Dreamcast doesn't help much, either). The only thing I was really disappointed with was that there was no voice acting. Aside from the battle shouts and incantations for spells, there was nothing. This is kind of an old game, so it might be hard to find unless you go buy it online somewhere. I'm giving it a

9.5 out of 10

.
It’s a great game, one that’s just screaming for a sequel! It’ll probably happen one day, I hope.
