The mother of a Catholic man murdered in County Antrim says she cannot understand why her son was targeted.

James McMahon, 21, died in hospital after three masked men beat him with baseball bats on 20 November in Lisburn.

Mr McMahon suffered serious head injuries during the assault at Hancock Street in the city centre.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where he died the next day.

Chief Constable Hugh Orde said possible loyalist involvement in the murder was a major line of inquiry.

Police have not ruled out a sectarian motive for the attack.

Speaking on BBC Northern Ireland's Good Morning Ulster, Deirdre McMahon said she was trying to come to terms with her son's death, but had no idea why he was targeted.

"He harmed nobody and how these people who are supposed to be human could do what they did," Mrs McMahon said.

"How they could stand and beat my son when he was lying on the ground, maybe dead after the first blow, and they continued to do that.

"I just don't understand how anybody could do that.

"I would like to know from those people who did this to James, why this was done to him. I would like them to explain their reason for doing this to my son."
