From Greymouth it is a short trip up the coast to the non-town of Punakaiki which is famed for its bizarrely shaped 'Pancake Rocks'. These limestone columns have been eroded by the waves for millennia, but no one can explain the layering of the rock which does indeed look like a stack of pancakes. There are also some fine blowholes which emit a throaty roar and belch foam as the waves crash in at high tide.

Greymouth itself is a featureless town. However, the hostel I stay in called Noahs Ark is quite special. All the dormitories are called after animals; I am in the Leopard Room which is resplendent with leopard posters, leopard toys, paw prints on the wall and leopard skin pillowcases. At least you won't forget your room number here.
