Some Further Thoughts on the Stones

Like Larry Gamliel in his December 2002 FolkNotes review, I too am a Stones

aficionado. Hey, how could I not be? They early on covered Willy Dixon and

Robert Johnson songs and brought blues into the mainstream. But they were

truly revolutionary, not so much for their music but for their attitude.

One must remember that up till the Stones all the bad boys of Rock were either tamed (Elvis) or banished (Jerry Lee Lewis) by the music business. The basic pop theme was "our parents don't understand us but we love them and they will someday see that we were really in love." I remember a song called One In A Million, recorded, I think, by Gene Pitney. It was a plaintive lament about a couple of teenagers in love. It ended with the lines: But we'll forgive them because we love them, and after all is said and done, one in a million, a million to one.

Then along came the Stones with utter contempt for their elders, who sang

What a drag it is getting old in Mother Little Helpers, a song about a pill-popping suburban housewife. In addition to unfettered contempt for parents, they spewed ego bile like no one had before, and reveled in unabashed sexuality. Don't Play With Me Cause You're Playin' With Fire and Under My Thumb are examples of the former, while Little Red Rooster and Let's Spend the Night Together exemplify the latter.

In 1964 this was new, revolutionary and, to my mind, basically healthy. The

Stones backed it all up with uncompromising rhythm and blues music and exaggerated stage antics. I remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan Show, where they sang a cleaned- up version of Lets Spend the Night Together -  but their lascivious toothy smiles left no doubt what they were singing about.

Note from Abroad

Hello my dear friends,

I hope you and yours are all well, as we head to the end of this harrowing

year. While not comparable to the events in Israel, even here in Canada we

have felt the hate - in March arsonists set fire to my beloved synagogue, and

it was a miracle that someone with a cell phone happened by at 2 am and called the fire department that responded promptly. Fifteen minutes later and my shul would have been a pile of ash and tears. On the other side of the balance, I released another record this year. Part solo, part band, and heavy on the blues, making music is my way of saying no to those who say no. The website has been updated to reflect this happy event, so check it out to listen to

cuts if you'd like. I look forward to hearing from you, and seeing you in the

near future.

I wish you all a happy Sylvester (he's not only a cat!) and abundant

blessings from Above.

love,  nz
