Posted 11 November 1999 by Sonny Fontenot The Fonteneau's were the largest extended family residing at Fort Toulouse during the early to mid eighteenth century. Being the largest family and longest residents of the outpost in the Alabama wilderness, their farmstead/plantation was the largest and most elaborate of all farmsteads in proximity to the garrison. Because of this, it is reasonable to assume that it served as the focal point for other residents of the garrison as well as for the many Indian neighbors in the vicinity. Tentative plans are being made to construct a replica of this farmstead, based on archeological evidence and logical reasoning. Like the memorial to Jean-Louis, it would become a permanent fixture and point of attraction at the Fort Toulouse/Jackson Park and a memorial to the Fonteneau family who lived there. It would include a historical marker describing the lives of the first Fonteneau family and a list of descendant contributors to this memorial. Although limited public funding is available, the goal can only be reached through supplemental private contributions.
