Hello dear friend. If you are here, chances are you are a grieving Mom, or you know someone who is.

A grieving mother is like no one else.  We are set apart, all of us members of a sisterhood that we want
no part of.

No one... not your friends, not your family, not even your husband understands what you
really go through each day.  It's nearly impossible to even put it into words.

A grieving mother is an ocean of secret heartaches.  A grieving mother wears a smile for the world, even as
her heart is breakingWe are given smalltalk when what we really need is a hug. We are told how strong we are, when what we really want to do is scream. We hide our pain for the sake of others.

The poem below is one I wrote on a day that I'd been speaking with a very dear friend, and I
wanted so much for her to let me say the things that were pressing on my heart. No matter how I approached it, she would change the subject.  Read on dear sister, because I know you have been there.....
What a Grieving Mother Really Thinks
Hello old friend,
Oh yes you know
I lost my child a while ago.
No, no please
Don’t look away
And change the subject
It’s ok.
You see at first I couldn’t feel,
It took so long, but now it’s real.
I hurt so much inside you see
I need to talk,
Come sit with me?
You see, I was numb for so very long,
And people said, “My, she is so strong.”
They did not know I couldn’t feel,
My broken heart made all unreal.
But then one day, as I awoke
I clutched my chest, began to choke,
Such a scream, such a wail,
Broke from me..
My child! My child!
The horror of reality.
But everyone has moved on, you see,
everyone except for me.
Now, when I need friends most of all,
Between us there now stands a wall.
My pain is more than they can bear,
When I mention my child,
I see their blank stare.
“But I thought you were over it,”
Their eyes seem to say--
No, no, I can’t listen to this, not today.
So I smile and pretend, and say, “Oh, I’m ok”.
But inside I am crying, as I turn away.
And so my old friend, I shall paint on a smile,
As I have from the start,
You never knowing all the while,
All I’ve just said to you in my heart.

**You are free to copy or use any poetry on this website, but please be kind enough to include the author's name. I stress this as I have found that many of the poems from this site have been shared on the internet, but no credit to the authors were given. These Moms have poured their hearts out. It is just the right thing to do.*******
That day was very hard for me. I realized that people don't understand that our grief gets worse before it gets better. The reality of what we have lost doesn't hit us all at once. We are numb for a very long time.  By the time the numbness wears off, everyone around you has gone on with their lives, forgetting in a sense.

They cannot imagine why you are more devastated a year
after your childs death than you were when it happened. So I am hoping that this will be a place where we can at least talk to each other. (Since no one else can seem to handle talking with us)

If you have a poem you've written about your child, or about how you are feeling, please e-mail it to me, and I will post it on the poetry page. I know that writing is one of the ways we have to release some of our grief. If you just plain want to talk you can e-mail me, or post your story in the guestbook so you can share your thoughts/feelings with everyone. This page is brand new, but I know over time we will have much to say to each other
.

If you are feeling alone, please visit the guestbook. Many mothers just like you have shared their stories there. While all of their stories are sad, they also let us know that we are not alone in how we are feeling. These Moms' bravery and honesty in sharing have created a place where we can feel 'safe' in talking about our feelings, and what it is to lose a child. I would really urge you to take a moment to look at it, and if you are feeling up to it, please do share your story with us. Hearing from other Moms like ourselves helps more than you could ever know.
