Revelations
by Robert M. Velkym
June 21, 1997...
Scorching, parched by the burning sun of the barren waste land. The
great rains have long since left us in this desert on the coast of the
inner sea. I remember the night distinctly...
The earth shook and knocked me out of my bed. I fell, hit my head against
the floor, and blacked out. The next thing I remember was my room was filling
with water and I scrambled out the door and went to the family boat. By
this time the rain was coming down harder then I had ever seen in my life.
I switched on the radio to KROQ and the D.J. , Sluggo, spoke softly to
his audience. He spoke of the satellites that told of a huge storm engulfing
the entire planet. He said he was going to see his family in a sad, uncharacteristic
tone. Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam's " Better Man" flowed out of
the radio soothing me into a troubled sleep.
When I awoke I was floating on a lake. I was puzzled but when I looked
around all I could see was the roof of the new civil arts plaza. I flipped
on the motor and cruised over to the roof. It was amazing, in one night
the entire valley had been filled and from my guess killed everyone in
sight except me. I went swimming and gathered up rations and supplies and
began up the coast. I followed the valley and cut across a wide channel
into the interior of the continent. The entire inner states were covered
in a sheet of water. I found a dry spot on the southern coast to camp for
the night. I dared not get out of the boat until I am curtain the rains
have gone. I flip on the radio and scanned the channels. There was no static
but just a single sound, the test pattern.
For weeks I sailed to sea, watching for life, hoping to be discovered
by humanity so that I may endure another day. After all the only thing
that kept me alive was the hope that I was not alone.
Winter came and went, spring bringing a brief bit of joy to my lonely
life. I have found a home from where I am now writing. I have settled into
a ski lodge in what I think was once Telluride. There is food enough here
for me for roughly ten years. It is mostly dehydrated vegetables and can
food, but something is better than nothing. I have also discovered a small
local radio station and I broadcast my location " 50 degrees north,
32 degrees west, Telluride, Help..." over and over.
I have filled my days with constructing a suitable fort, should I encounter
hostile persons. Everyday I sweep the area in my boat looking for life.
There are animals, some I think from zoos, and everything is overwhelmingly
green. I have stockpiled wood for the winter.
My only companions are two dogs, Dakota and Timber. They are huskies
that i recovered from a cabin up on the slopes, they were half starved
when I found them, now they are doing just fine. I am planning to explore
the rest of the coast in a weeks time and to try and find humankind. Until
then I will pack and prepare.
May 30, 1998
I have been preparing for the last five days for my sojourn. I feel
I am well suited for any situation that may arise. I have found a Remington
12 gauge shotgun and I hope I don't have to use it. I am going to travel
overland do to the fact that I have the lodges All Terrain Vehicle on hand
and a large supply of gasoline.
I have loaded the A.T.V. and I plan to leave at dawn tomorrow. You know
it's funny that when we live without power r clocks our bodies naturally
revert to getting up and going to sleep with the sun. Hmm...
I am bringing a second cart just in case I find people and they wish
to return with me. I am prepared to make a generous offer for anyone willing
to come with me. I hope to god they do. I will present myself as a leader
and I hope to lead humankind to salvation.
God let me find someone else. I'll write more upon my return. Until
then I will mark my trail with red metal stakes and have Timber and Dakota
follow behind to mark their own trails. If I do get lost maybe they will
be beneficial to finding my way back to Telluride, home.
June 25, 1998
** Note: The next day I record will be marked P. A. for post apocalypse.
I will start with June 20th as the first day because that was the day this
hell was unleashed on me. That would make today January 5, 0002.
To be continued...
