Bornean Bay Cat
Catopuma badia
The Bornean Bay Cat is as its name suggest only found in Borneo and is so rare that no pictures of a living specimen are known to exist. The bay cat has been reported to grow up to 2 feet in length and has a tail measuring a little over half its body length. The base fur colouration is chestnut brown although grey specimens are also known - the legs and undersides are faintly spotted and there are white markings on the head and chin of the animal. The tail also has white markings toward the end and is terminated in a black tip. In appearance it is reported to resemble Temminck's Golden Cat and genetic analysis is known to support this association to the degree that some suggest that it should be classified as a sub-species of the Golden Cat.

The bay cat is thought to live mainly in the dense forested regions of Borneo and is possible associated with habitats close to water. Because of its rarity little is known of the lifestyle on this cat. Although not enough is known of the distribution of the bay cat it is probable that erosion of its natural habitat may be a threat - the bay cat is listed in CITES Appendix 2.
