Great White Sharks
This is the star of 'Jaws' movies and the fear of being eaten often makes people irrational about anything to do with them. In fact they dont eat humans at all and attacks are meraly a mistaken identity since they have a weak sense of sight. Always thought as the 'killer' of the sharks but now numbers of attacks by the 'bull shark' are getting blamed upon the 'great white'. the largest officaly recorded was 6.4m (21 feet) long and weighed 3312kg / 7302lb. There has been many exaggerated claims of specimens over 30 feet but most of these have been proved false. It is currently belived the maximum these sharks can grow is up to 25 feet.
Birth
The Great White gives birth to live young unlike many other sharks that lay eggs. The newly born shark gets no help from mother and must fend for itself. A newborn Great White is believed to be around four feet long from unborn sharks found in a pregnant female. They reach maturity in about 10 years.

Cage-Free and still alive
In the magazine shakers and divers #1 (sept.1997) Jermiah Sullivan recounts an absolutely amazing story about him swimmming cage-free with a great white off South Australia. there are also a couple of B & W photos to prove it. One has him holding the tail of this 16 foot shark and being towed around. A small part of his account is reproduced below.
soon, I was so close to him I could stroke his torso as hie swam by - he seemed quite unconcerned. On his next pass I tested him further by hooking my right hand around the upper lobe of his tail. when his momentem jerked me into hi slipstream he didnt so much as flinch... The only acknowledgment of my presence was a slight but very deliberate glance over his right side as he towed me out to sea. ... I turned and began swimming with all my strength towards the cage. ... I remember cursing myself for not calculating this risk a little more carefully. ... I turned towards the big boy ... everything was quite... he cruised up, looked at me sideways and appeared to say "Oh, Jeremiah, it's you!"

Five times that same afternoon Jeremiah had contact with that 16 foot great white. There were three Great Whites at the site. The sharks obviously had every opportunity to attack the divers but didn't.
King Of The Seas (or are they)
Great Whites were always thought to be the king of the seas. No animal attacked the Great White according to the experts. Interesting new facts were recovered in late 1997 of an orca (killer whale) attacking and killing a great White. The Great White was about 10 feet long and the Orca 20 feet long. From reports it seems the Whale was not defending its young calf as the White Shark was giving the whales a wide berth. It is thought that the whale was teaching the calf hot to feed as the mother did not eat a shark after the kill but instead gave it to calf.
