Forgetting Tomorrow
By Derrick Clayton
Well hey there music fans, we had a great band Saturday night, Forgetting
Tomorrow from Birmingham, for all those who weren't there you really missed a
great show. Forgetting Tomorrow brought a alternative sound with an emo
twist, along with a church van loaded with people. The guys from the band
are really cool guys, they have been together a year with the exclusion of
Jesse (the bass player) who has been with Forgetting Tomorrow for six
months. After their set was over and they broke down their stuff, I had a
chance to interview them, hopefully my interview will give all who read a
view of what the guys from Forgetting Tomorrow are like.
First off let me explain what's going on, a few weeks back I was talking to
Gary about getting more involved at the Underground. He had been thinking
about getting someone to interview the bands, and the rest is history. Ok now
that you're up to speed on things it’s time that we move on to the
interview. After rounding the guys up, we went outside and started with the
interview.
I had found out that their music is going to be played on the SteelRoots TV
show, for those of you who have no clue what that is, it’s a Christian
extreme sports show from the record label by the same name. Back to the
story, I ask the guys how that happened and Smitty (the drummer and
vocalist) had this to say “I just kinda sent in one of our CD’s to this girl
over there named Jessica and she was like....we really like your music...and
I originally wanted to be on their record label, and she said that she’s got
enough bands right now but she said that she wanted to put our music on one
of their TV shows...It’s a real big break for us.”
The next question I asked the guys is how they came us with their name, and
yet again Smitty had the answer, “Forgetting Tomorrow is sorta a name I came
up with...if you look in the Bible, Luke 12:24 it’s Jesus’ disciples talking
to him about their worries, their talking to Him about their fears...and He
says have I not created the birds, do I not give them what they need, do I
not do this for them...He says don’t worry about tomorrow....and we say that
if you’re struggling with a decision to make a leap of faith, don’t put it
off...if God's tugging at your heart don’t put it off until tomorrow...” The
subject of denominations came up; the guys have nothing against
denominations, in fact there is three different denominations in the band.
Jesse had this to say about denominations, “I think that denominations don’t
really matter....the main point is that Jesus Christ came down and died for
our sins, and you have to trust Him and believe that he died for our sins.”
In an interview you always have serious questions, I wanted to “swim up
stream” and ask some questions that I know everyone would love to know about
Forgetting Tomorrow, so I asked Smitty what was his favorite fish and he
came up with this, “ To eat or to look at?” I answered back with, “either
one.” He then replied, “ to eat, I guess it would be Orange Ruffy, and to
look at...I would have to say those big fish that look like an oval that you
see on the screen savers...” So right after the fish question I asked Nick
(guitarist) how long he had been playing the guitar he said three or four
years and that his first guitar was the Fender Strat that he had just
finished playing with inside. I also found out that Nick had a funny
nickname, which I couldn’t pronounce much less type, but I can tell you it’s
his last name but backwards, whatever that maybe.
The next question was directed to Bryant (the other guitarist), I asked
him if he likes Spam, the ham-like mystery meat that is very good fried, he
said that he has never eaten Spam. When I heard this I was in disbelief, I
mean how can you call yourself a true guitarist if you’ve never had Spam,
but anyway Bryant is a really awesome guy, I guess the reason that he has
never tried Spam is that he is from Connecticut. Smitty called him a
"Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court."
I came up with these questions before I met these guys, and the next
question that I asked Jesse was, “Do you find ladies like guys who play bass
more than guys who don’t?” I found out that it fit his personality almost
perfect, his reply was, “Since I’ve started playing bass I’ve found that the
ladies are attracted to the bass.” His other band mates seemed to disagree
with him on that one, but hey the real answer was evident by a group of
four young ladies that had homemade t-shirts that said “I love Jesse” on the
back of them, so I'll just let you decide on the winner of that litttle
scuffle.
Back to a “serious” note I asked Nick if he was or ever had been a walrus,
and he said that he used to be but he got better, Smitty added, “his
favorite song is that Beatle song...I am the walrus.” Then I asked Jesse
perhaps the most important question of the night, “What do you think about
pregnant beavers?” He answered, “They should be exterminated...I’ve always
said save a tree eat a beaver.”
Some of the bands musical influences are: Incubus, Radiohead, 238, Hopes
fall, Further Seems Forever, and Underoath. I asked them if they and any
advice for a up coming Christian band and this is what they had to say, “
Try to have fun with it, don’t be to serious all the time, just try to have
fun with each other, don’t worry about what other people think of you, play
for God not yourself, and keep Christ the focus of your music.”
Forgetting Tomorrow, four awesome friends who love each other and most
importantly love the Lord Jesus Christ and love spreading the gospel through
their music.
