Ruth Mullendore Gilmore
1945-1998
On March 22, 1945, Ruth Mullendore was born in Magnolia, MS, to George and Ruth
Mullendore. Ruth was active in the 4-H program, winning state record in
clothing in 1963. She attended Belhaven College in Jackson and received a
Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. Ruth went on to serve as 4-H
Youth Agent in Forrest County. She married Cecil D. Gilmore on December 28,
1969. She then served as 4-H Youth Agent in Oktibbeha County from 1969-1971
and Home Economist in Noxubee County from 1972-1973. After her first daughter
was born, Laura Ruth Gilmore, Ruth stayed home to raise her children. A
second daughter, Heather Cecile Gilmore, was born two years later. Ruth went
back to school and received a Master of Education degree from the University of
Southern Mississippi in 1982. She served Jones County as 4-H Youth Agent from
1988-1991 and Forrest County from 1991 until her death in 1998. Ruth was a
past officer of the Mississippi Association of Extension 4-H Youth Agents,
received the Outstanding Mississippi 4-H Youth Agent Award in 1995, a 25 year
member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Parkway Heights United
Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, the Mississippi 4-H All Stars, and
PEO. Ruth also served on the Forrest County Humane Society and Children’s
Shelter Boards.
