1565     Joseph caro codifies Jewish law in his Shulhan Arukh
1585   Joachim Gans, a Central European minerals expert on Sir Walter Raleigh's expeditions, surveys the Carolina coast  
1596   Luis de Carvajal is burned at the stake by the Holy Office of the Inquisition in Mexico  
1598     Jacob Tirado builds a synagogue in Amsterdam
