Avellaneda

Originally of Galicia , this surname has a branch that spread all over America and gained particular fortune and fame in Argentina, where a politician with that surname- Nicolás Avellaneda- was president in the XIX century.

There were Avellanedas in almost every Iberian order. In the Order of Santiago, for example, we find as participants: don Lope de Avellaneda y Delgadillo, born in Aranda de Duero (1575); don Andrés y don Manuel de Avellaneda Peñalosa (Alcalá de Henares, 1668); don Francisco Javier de Avellaneda y Sandoval (Campo de Criptana, 1706); don Rodrigo de Avellaneda Sandoval y Rojas, Marquess of Santa Clara and Torremayor (Madrid, 1713) and don Pablo de Avellaneda y Peñalosa (Alcalá de Henares, 1715) among other.

In the Order of Calatrava we find don Bernardino de Avellaneda y Leyva (Aranda del Duero, 1593), don Juan de Avellaneda Delgadillo, Count of Castrillo (A. del Duero, 1599) and don Féliz de Avellaneda y Zuñiga (Sevilla, 1641) among other lords of the same surname that proved their nobility by entering the order. Almost a century later, in 1663, don Gaspar de Avellaneda Haro Sotomayor of Madrid entered the Order of Alcántara.
