I Want to go Home
by Gordon Korman

Retell

In I Want to go Home, Rudy Miller has been sent to camp (for a whole month!) on the advice of his school guidance counsellor. Right from the start, Rudy hates camp. All the boys in Rudy's cabin think he is a nut, paticularly Harold Greene, who is always making mean comments about Rudy. But Rudy does make one friend, Mike Webster, and together they get back at Harold by sticking garbage in his shoe and playing other tricks on him.
Mike and Rudy spend most of their time playing chess, because Rudy says he doesn't play baseball, soccer, or any other sport. However, one day the counsellors make Rudy participate in the sports program, and he scores four runs in baseball, ten goals in soccer, saves Harold from drowning, and wins at all the other sports he plays. The only thing Rudy can't do is escape from camp. But that doesn't stop him from trying: Rudy and Mike try to escape at every opportunity, by stealing boats, hiding on the supply boat, or running away when they are taken to the mainland for events with other camps. Every time, something happens to bring them back.

Will Mike and Rudy ever manage to escape? What will happen when their parents arrive for visitors' day?

Recommendation

I recommend this book to anyone who has ever been to camp, and to anyone who likes funny stories.
