CHOCOBO BREEDING
Perhaps one of the most difficult tasks in Final Fantasy VII is breeding the fabled "Gold Chocobo." With the Gold Chocobo the Highwind becomes practically obsolete. With the gold chocobo you can get the literally awesome summon materia "Knights of the Round." With the Gold Chocobo you will be unstoppable at the Gold Saucer's chocobo races. Yes indeed, the Gold Chocobo is the holy grail of Final Fantasy VII. Now how the hell do you get the guilded warker anyway? Well really, it isn't as hard as you may think. Some other internet sites have devoted way too much effort to elongating this procedure and making it sound like a technical manual, but The Mind's Eye doesn't think its all that hard and we feel that just about anybody with half a brain and two opposable thumbs can do it.
(This can only be done later in the game, discs 2 and 3 after you have the Highwind.)
1. Make sure you gave plenty of gil. You will need it.
2. Find the chocobo sage's house on the northern continent NW of the bone village and buy plenty of greens from him. Don't buy any of the nuts he offers (they're pretty useless), just the greens.
3. Go back to the chocobo ranch and buy all six of the available stables from the guy in the farmhouse.
4. On the northern continent fight the monsters in the grassy area near the Bone Village until you receive or steal a carob nut. Try to get a few of these if possible. While your in the general vicinity travel due east from the Bone Village to a group of islands in the middle of the ocean. Fight the monsters there until you get some Zeio nuts.
5. Go to Rocket Town, near Nibelhiem, then travel a short distance NW, until you see chocobo tracks in the gound on some peninsulas. Land the Highwind, and walk over the tracks. (If you don't already know make sure someone in your party has "Chocobo Lure" materia equipped)
6. Catch 4 chocobos. When asked to, send 'em to the stables you just paid for.
7. Go back to the chocobo ranch and talk to Chocobo Billy in the barn. He will give you a list of choices. Select Moving Chocobos. Scroll through the choices of chocobos. Chocobo Billy will make comments about the chocobos you have in the yard to be moved to the stables. Move only chocobos with a "good," "great," or "wonderful" status. If all or any of your chocobos are in "so-so" or "I wouldn't recommend this one" status then set 'em free and repeat steps 5 and 6. Make sure to have a male and a female chocobo.
8. After you've picked out at least two nice chocobos and gave them names, feed 'em. Select Feeding Chocobos from Billy's menu. Feed them greens until the message at the bottom of the screen reads "No Improvement." If you don't have enough greens repeat step 2.
9. Go to the Gold Saucer via Corel. (You probably know where it is by now)
10. Go to Chocobo Square and talk to the woman in the pink dress, Ester, by the STAFFROOM. She will ask you if you want to register a chocobo. Select one of your chocobos and begin a race. It doesn't matter if you choose the long course of the short one but you have to get first place three times, not necessarily in a row, to move it up in class. The purpose of this is to make it easier to breed a new kind of chocobo. The higher its class, the more there is a likelyhood of it breeding a new species variation. Racing your chocobos is also a great way to earn more GP for the Gold Saucer.
11. After you've raced them and achieved at least an "A" class, leave the Gold Saucer and return to the chocobo ranch.
12. Save your game just outside the ranch.
13. After you've saved your game ask Billy to mate two chocobos. (You will only be able to mate opposite sex chocobos.) He will ask you what nut you wish to use to mate the two chocobos. Make sure you use the Carob Nut to breed the chocobo. The resulting chocobo may be either green or blue. If its not, reset the Playstation and try again.
CHOCOBO BREEDS AND THEIR ABILITIES
COLOR ABILITY
Yellow Generic Chocobo
Green Can travel over mountains
Blue Can travel over shallow water areas only
Black Can travel over mountains and shallow water but not oceans
Gold No obstacles, can travel over all land, mountains, shallow seas, and oceans
14. After you've bred a green or blue chocobo, then you must breed the other one that you don't have in the opposite sex. If you only have 1 pair of generic yellow chocobos then you will not be able to immediately breed another one. Perform steps 9-12 on the new chocobo you already have, and by the time you come back from racing that chocobo the parents should be ready to breed another one.
15. Now that you have a male or female green chocobo and a male or female blue chocobo both with an "S" class ranking, you can breed a black chocobo. Perform steps 12 and 13 in order to breed the black chocobo. Remember to feed it. If you run out of greens, buy more from the chocobo sage.
16. Once you have the black chocobo built up to an "S" class ranking your almost ready to make a Gold Chocobo. There is one more ingredient, a "wonderful chocobo." Go to the North Continent and travel due west from the Ice Village. Your not going to be able to land on the snow with the Highwind so you'll have to walk there from a green patch of land nearby. Acquire some more chocobos in this area.
17. Return to the chocobo ranch and repeat step 7, but only put a "wonderful" chocobo in a stable. If you don't have one repeat step 16. When you do have one, feed it. Repeat steps 9-12. This chocobo must achieve "S" class. Now ask Chocobo Billy to mate the "wonderful" chocobo with the (opposite sex only) black chocobo. When asked which nut to use, use the Zeio nut. With a little luck you should have The Gold Chocobo. If you don't get it on the first try, reset the game and try again.
Now that you have the Gold Chocobo you can travel to any location on the map even the sand around the Gold Saucer. There are several items that can only be received with a special chocobo. These include: Quadra Magic materia, Mime materia, HP<-->MP materia, and "Kights of the Round" summon materia. Once you have the Gold Chocobo you will be filled with the glee of the Chocobo, and life will not be same ever again. Wark! Wark! : )
