Descendants of Lars (--?--)

Generation One

1. Lars1 (--?--); m. unk (--?--).

The name of Lars (?) is an assumption by the researcher based on his knowledge of Norwegian naming practices. The son of Lars (?) is named Ole Larsen, therefore the first name of the father would be Lars.1

Children of Lars1 (--?--) and unk (--?--) were:

Generation Two

2. Ole2 Larsen (Lars1(--?--)); m. Ronnoug/ Anne (--?--).

The name of Ole Larsen is an assumption by the researcher based on his knowledge of Norwegian naming patterns. His son, Lars Olsen, has the second name of Olsen which means that Ole is the first name of his father. Lars Olsen b. about 1753 (see Generation Three) named his second born son, Ole, the name of Lars' father. Normally the first born son would be named after the father's father but in this family the first born son, Torger, was named after the mother's father. There are exceptions to the rule and reasons for those exceptions.1

Ronnoug/ Anne (--?--) Ole Larsen's (see 2 above) wife and Lars Olsen's (see Generation Three) mother may have been named Anne or Ronnoug. This is using information from the Norwegian naming patterns in which the first daughter born to the marriage was normally named after the father's mother. However in this family, the first born son was named after the name of the mother's father, therefore, the first born daughter may have been named after the mother's mother.  1

Children of Ole2 Larsen and Ronnoug/ Anne (--?--) were:

Generation Three

3. Lars3 Olsen (Ole2Larsen, Lars1(--?--)); b. circa 1753;2 m. Marit Torgersdatter, daughter of Torger (--?--) and Anne/ Ronnoug (--?--), before 1788; Marriage date was assumed using date of birth of first child.3

Reference: 339. He and Marit Torgersdatter, along with the children listed below, appeared on the census of 1801 Tofte Farm, Froen, Christians Amt, Norway; Although there were three Tofte farms (Nigard, Oppigard and Utistuen) in 1801 the census listed all of the individuals living on the farm under the Tofte name.

In 1801 the Parish that the Tofte farm was in was called the Froen Parish. This parish was later divided into Nord (North) Fron and Sør (South) Fron. The county was known as Christians Amt in 1801 because Norway was under the control of Denmark. It was changed to Oppland Flyke after Norway became part of Sweden.

The reason for the change is that in 1814 after the Napoleanic Wars, Denmark lost control of Norway and was forced to cede Norway to Sweden. The words "Froen" and "Christians Amt " are Danish words. "Fron" and "Oppland Flyke" are Norwegian. Amt and Flyke both mean county.4

Marit Torgersdatter was born circa 1761.2 Reference: 340.

Children of Lars3 Olsen and Marit Torgersdatter were as follows:

Generation Four

4. Ole4 Larsen (Lars3Olsen, Ole2Larsen, Lars1(--?--)); b. 1794;2 m. Goro Pedersdatter, daughter of Peder Iversen and Ane Karlsdatter, 6 Nov 1824 Tofte farm, Sor Fron Parish, Oppland, Norway;6 d. 17 Apr 1858 Tofte farm, Sor Fron Parish, Oppland, Norway;7 bur. 1 May 1858 Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway.8

Reference: 217.

Goro Pedersdatter was born on 1 Dec 1799 Sor Fron Parish, Oppland, Norway; There is some doubt as to the location and names of Goro's parents. Research is being conducted in this area.6 She died after 1875 and later research has indicated this may have been as late as 1897. (See note dated 16 July, 2000.)9 Reference: 216.

She appeared on the census of 1865 Toftelokken farm, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway; Goro is living with her oldest son, Lars and his family. This is 8 years after the death of her husband.

10 She appeared on the census of 1875 Tofthagen, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway; Goro is living with the Ole Knudsen Tofthagen family. I have listed only the House Father and his wife and Goro Pedersdatter. They have sons and daughters and other persons that are not relevant to this family history. Research has produced no information as to the relationship of this family to Goro and I am assuming that this is the correct Goro.

This note about Goro comes from a conversation with Theodor Tofthagen in the Sør Fron Nursing home on the evening of 16 July 2000. Mr. Tofthagen is 91 years old. He is quite hardy and appears to have a very keen mind. Theodor is speaking and the conversation is paraphrased by the researcher.

The story that my father told to me is that Goro Pedersdatter lived on the Tofthagen farm. (Researcher Notes: This is probably the cotter farm where Goro and Ole Larsen lived before he died.) She had purchased this farm, when I do not know, and then some time later sold it to my father, Anton Tofthagen.
When one of Goro's daughters  moved to Ringebu Parish she left Sør Fron and went there to live with her. She lived to be about 98 years old.

Researcher Notes: My second cousin, Anton Tagastad, who is a member of the Sør Fron Historical Center and its leader for 6 years stated that probably what Goro sold to Mr. Tofthagen was only the cottage that sat on the property because the land would not have belonged to her.9

Children of Ole4 Larsen and Goro Pedersdatter were as follows:

Generation Five

5. Lars5 Olsen (Ole4Larsen, Lars3Olsen, Ole2Larsen, Lars1(--?--));

Lars Olsen was born 15 Jan 1827, Toftehagen, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway;13 He was baptized 28 Jan 1827 Sør Fron Church, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway; Reference: 209.

Lars Olsen married Embjor Iversdatter, daughter of Iver Johanesen and Anne Olsdatter, 28 Oct 1850  6

He was also known as Lars Olsen Toftehagen.21

Lars Olsen and Embjor Iversdatter appeared on the census of 1865 Toftelokken farm, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway. Lars Olsen is listed as a Husmand Med Jord (farmer with land). The children listed below also appear on that census.22

Embjor Iversdatter was born before 20 Dec 1822.6 She was baptized on 20 Dec 1822.24 She died on 10 Dec 1872 Tofte farm, Sor Fron Parish, Oppland, Norway.7 She was buried on 21 Dec 1872 Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway.8 Reference: 208.

Children of Lars5 Olsen and Embjor Iversdatter all born Tofte farm, Sor Fron, Oppland, Norway, were as follows:

The emigration records for the Lars Olsen Toftehagen family appear below. The record shows that Lars' wife, Embjor, emigrated with the family to America. However, she died in 1872. Perhaps Lars had applied for emigration prior to the death of his wife.

Lars Olsen married Anna Iverson 21 Aug 1882 Sparta, Monroe, WI, M; They were married by a Justice of the Peace ( Samuel ?) of Sparta, Monroe, WI. Lars gave his father's name as Ole Larsen but did not know his mother's name. His occupation was farmer. Anna did not know either of her parents name. She was born in Norway.

The marriage was held in Leon, Monroe, WI and the witnesses were Henry Oswald and Ulrich Wettstein;20

Lars Olsen died 24 May 1891 Leon, Monroe, WI, at age 64; and is buried in Fish Creek Ridge Norwegian Lutheran Cemetery.

Anna Iverson. Reference: 354.

There were no children of Lars5 Olsen and Anna Iverson.

6. Mari5 Olsen (Ole4Larsen, Lars3Olsen, Ole2Larsen, Lars1(--?--));

Mari Olsen was born 16 Dec 1833 TofteE, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway;25 and was baptized 5 Jan 1834;26 She married Iver Anderson, son of Anders Larsen and Anne Olsdtr, 6 Oct 1869 Sør Fron Church, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway; Reference: 213.

She was confirmed on 18 Jun 1848 Sør Fron Church, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway.28

As of 1865, she was also known as Mari Olsdatter.29

Mari Olsen appeared on the census of 1865 Forr Nordre farm, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway; It shows that a Mari Olsdatter is working as a tjenestepige (servant girl or hired girl) for the Hans Olsen family on the Forr Nordre farm. Matrikkel 222.

She is not married and is 32 years old. It indicates that she was born in Sondre Froens Pr. (Sør Fron).

(Note by researcher -- This does not confirm that this is the same Mari Olsdatter that was born to Ole Larsen b. 1794 and Goro Pedersdatter b. 1799, however, later information that is confirmed shows that she married Iver Andersen who was also from the Forr farm.).30

Mari Olsen and Iver Anderson were married in the Sør Fron Church on 6 Oct 1869. Mari was 35 years old and Iver was 22 years of age.27

The Utflyttede (outgoing from parish) record in the Sør Fron Church Book indicates that: Married Couple Iver Andersen (26) Forlokken and Mari Olsdtr (38) Tofthagen left the parish and moved to Ringebu parish.
This parish is also in Oppland County.32

Mari Olsen and Iver Anderson moved to Ringebu parish on 29 Oct 1872 Ringebu, Oppland, Norway; The Inflyttede Record (Incoming to Parish) for the Ringebu parish shows that on this date Iver Anderson (25) from Forlokken, Sør Fron and Mari Oldsdtr from Tofthagen, Sør Fron arrived in the Ringebu Parish, Oppland. They are listed as the owners of the farm Midtmoen. Information on Midtmoen farm can be found in the exhibit file for Mari Oldsdtr.33

A history of Ringebu parish shows that: Iver Andersen Fårålykkjen (Forrlokken) fekk skjøte på Midtmoen i 1870 av Jakob Sveinson for 650 spd. Gift med Mari Olsdtr. Gårdnumber 49, bnr. 5
Translation: Iver bought the Midtmoen farm in 1870 from Jacob Sveinson for 650 specie dollar. (This is the currency that was used before the kroner.) It also states that Iver was married to Mari Olsdtr

Mari Olsen and Iver Anderson appeared on the census of 1875 Midtmoen Farm, Ringebu, Oppland, Norway.34

Iver Anderson Midtmoen sold his farm to Lensmann H. Dahl for Kr. 4000 and Føra, (Føra indicates that Iver and Marie maintained the right to live on the farm for the rest of their lives.)31

Iver Anderson; Full name Iver Andrson Forrlokken, also written as Fårålykkjen was born circa 1847 Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway.27 As of 1900, he was also known as Iver Midtmoen. Iver took the farm name some time before 1900.35

Children of Mari5 Olsen and Iver Anderson were as follows:

7. Anne5 Olsen (Ole4Larsen, Lars3Olsen, Ole2Larsen, Lars1(--?--)); b. 8 Oct 1837; m. Ole Olsen Bredeveien, son of Ole Engebretsen Helgestuen and Rønnaug Jørgensdtr. Solbråtuen, before 1863.37 Reference: 95.

She was vaccinated for smallpox on 17 Aug 1844, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway.15 She was confirmed on 18 May 1851 Sør Fron Church, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway.38

As of 1863, she was also known as Anne Olsdtr. Tofthagen.39

She and Ole Olsen Bredeveien appeared on the census of 1865 Helgestuen Farm, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway. The 1865 census shows Ole Olsen, his wife, Anne Olsdatter, and two children. He is the husfader and working as an inderst (hired man) on the Helgestuen farm.40

She and Ole Olsen Bredeveien appeared on the census of 1875 Jørgenstuen farm, Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway. The 1875 census shows Ole Olsen and his family living on the Jørgenstuen farm. He is listed as the husfader for his family and his occupation is inderst skomager.41

Ole Olsen Bredeveien; Marta Bjerke, local historian in Sør Fron parish, lists name as Ole Olsen Brandrudseie Bredeveien. (Researcher Notes: Helgestuen where Ole grew up was a part of the Brandrud farm. Stig Bredeveien, great grandson of Ole, lists name as Ole Olsen Heglestuen Bredeveien and that he was born on 6 Mar 1838.37

As of about1863, he was also known as Ole Olsen Helgestuen.38

He purchased Helgestugu from Iver Bjørke in 1902 for 650 kroner.42  In 1919 he  purchased Breivegen nørdre from Iver Bjørke for 1500 kroner.42 Ole sold both farms , Helgestugu and Breivegen nørdre in 1920 to his son, Anton Olsen Bredeveien for 6000 kroner.42

Children of Anne5 Olsen and Ole Olsen Bredeveien were as follows:

8. Ole5 Olsen (Ole4Larsen, Lars3Olsen, Ole2Larsen, Lars1(--?--));47

Ole was christened in Sor Fron Church on June 13, 1841. The record states that he was born on June 9, 1841. His parents names are listed as Ole Larsen nedre (lower) Tofte... (unreadable, but is not hagen) og (and) Goro Pedersdatter. There are 5 sponsors listed and it appears that one of them is his grandfather, Lars Olsen. His grandfather Lars, also lives on the Tofte(?) farm, (the last word is unreadable but is the same word as in Ole Larsen's farm name.) Sponsors were generally close relatives or highly respected neighbors;47,48

Between 1841 and 1869, he was also known as Ole Olsen Toftehagen.

He was vaccinated for smallpox in 1845 Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway.15

Ole was confirmed June 8, 1856 in the Sor Fron Church. He received very good in judgment and good in application. After confirmation Ole became a member of the church. He was now considered an adult and able to support himself. If he had not studied for the confirmation he would have been unable to hold public office, receive any kind of license, or receive the protection of the law. At the time of confirmation, Ole was living with his parents on the Toftenedre farm. (Nedre in Norwegian means lower, therefore, they were living on the lower Tofte farm.) His certificate indicates that he was born on 9 June, 1841. His parents are shown as Ole og Goro.

In 1865 a census was taken of Norway that included all of the rural population. This is the first census since the year 1801 where the entire rural population had been counted. There had been other census but generally only the city dwellers, property owners, etc had been surveyed. The 1865 census for Norway shows an Ole Olsen, age 26, working as a "tjeneste" on the farm Tofteovre, ( this would be the upper Tofte farm.) A "tjeneste" was considered a servant or hired hand on the farm where they lived. For the work that they did on the farm they would receive food, perhaps a small amount of money, clothing and lodging. The lodging would be in the hayloft or in one of the outbuildings at the farm. The one thing doubtful about this record is the age. Since Ole was born in 1841, and of that fact there is no doubt, he would have been 24 in 1865. However, there are no other Ole Olsen's who come as close to Ole's age as this entry does. There is always the possibility that Ole left Sor Fron Parish prior to 1865. The church records were researched to see if he had moved and where he had gone but no record could be found of his leaving. This was called the "utflytter" record in which any person leaving the parish was listed and his/her destination. I could not find any utflytter record for Ole when he left to come to America either. Maybe they had a lazy pastor during that period.54

Ole Olsen stated on his naturalization papers that he emigrated to the United States from Kristinia, Norway on or about 15 May 1868 and arrived at the Port of New York on 28 May, 1868. He did not remember the name of the ship he came on. Later research has shown that these dates were wrong. Arne Sivertson, a native of Stavanger, Norway did some research and translation for me and he reported the following:

"I have searched the records at The Emigration Center here in Stavanger and there is a person by the name of Ole Olsen Toftehagen that emigrated from Kristiania (now Oslo) May 21, 1869, on board the ship "Argo". He was then 28 years old, worker, married and with destination, Chicago. He travelled together with Andreas Olsen Borolien, 20 years, also from S.Fron. In the church records I found that Ole was born June 9, 1841. Parents: Ole Larsen nedre Tofteiet (Researcher Notes: Arne said he believed that the minister used this to indicate one of the Tofte farms.) and his wife Guro Pedersdatter.

(Researcher Notes: There seems to be some confusion in the above information. I am sure that Arne is talking about our ancestor, Ole O. Hagen, but I don't believe that Ole was married until he came to America.  This must be an error on the emigration record. Also the date, 1868, as to when Ole left Norway was derived from the information he gave on his naturalization papers in 1913. A trunk which he brought with him shows the year 1869 painted on the inside cover. I believe that emigration record gives the correct date and Ole Olsen Toftehagen, AKA Ole O. Hagen came to America in 1869.).55

Between 1869 and 1880 he was also known as Ole Oleson and was also known as Ole O. Toftehagen. This second name appears to have been used only on church records during this period.

I found an Ole Oleson on the 1870 census for La Crosse, La Crosse, WI. He is listed on the census as "Ole Oleson", age 30. He is working as a farm hand for Herman Paulson, who is the head of household, and who is married with 7 children, the oldest being 15 years of age.
Why do I think this is my grandfather, Ole Olsen Toftehagen? In 1996 I received a travel trunk from my nephew, Avery Smith. It had been given to him by my mother, who was Avery's grandmother. This trunk is apparently the one that was brought by Ole to America. Some of the markings are still there and one of them has the words "La Crosse, WI" . This appears to be the destination of the trunk. I am speculating that Ole arrived in La Crosse and since he spoke no English immediately settled in a Norwegian community where he felt more comfortable. This township was definitely Norwegian with most of the persons named in the census as being born in Norway.
Why the name Oleson? Names changed rapidly as immigrants came to America. The biggest reason was probably because the people spoke different languages, many of them could not read or write, even their own language, and officials filling out forms wrote many of the names as they sounded. It is not to far fetched to get from Ol sen to Ole son. That would be especially true since Ole got his surname from being Ole's son. Also the fact that until 1880 we will find that the official records found about Ole give him a surname of "Oleson."56

Sometime between 1870 and 1874 Ole married  Marit Anderson. (Researcher notes: A family story that was told by my father is as follows: "My dad, Ole, got a job working for the railroad that was building a tunnel for the train to go through at Tunnel City, Monroe, WI. The railroad workers lived in Tomah at the St. Paul House, which was a boarding house, and took the train from Tomah to Tunnel City (about 5 miles) each day to go to work. At the St. Paul House there was a girl who served the food to the workers and worked in the kitchen. That girl was Mary Anderson. Mary and Ole fell in love and were married. After the work finished on the railroad they moved back to Leon township, Monroe county, WI to farm."

I have not been able to find any record of marriage for Ole and Mary. The date of marriage is based on the fact that the first child was born in Sept 1874;49

He appeared on the census of 1875 Greenfield, Monroe, WI using the name Ole Oleson. This was a State census in which only the name of the head of household is listed and the remainder of the family (if any) are numerically listed as to gender. This census indicates that besides Ole there are two females. This would be Marit, his wife, and Gina, their first child. I do know that Gina Andrine (she was called Jenny, it is English for Gina) was baptized in the Fish Creek Norwegian Lutheran Church Nov. 8, 1874. More will be said about this church later but it is located in Leon Township, Monroe County, WI. So if Ole and Marit met in Tomah while he was working on the tunnel it must have been about 1873. Then when Jenny was born in 1874 they went back to Leon to have her baptized and then returned to Tunnel City. One of the reasons that they did this may have been that by 1874, Ole's brother, Lars Olsen, with 4 of his children was living in Leon Township. Ole's brother, Lars Olsen Hagen, is listed as a sponsor for Gina at her baptism.57,58,59

On Apr 4, 1876 Ole Olson, declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States of America. This does not mean that he has become a naturalized citizen, but only, that in the Circuit Court at Sparta, Monroe, WI, he expressed his intention of becoming one.60

Ole Oleson and Marit Anderson appeared on the census of Jul 1880 Leon, Monroe, WI. This census is circumstantial evidence that Ole used the Ole Oleson on official records. The census lists his wife, Mary, and their four children, Jennie, Anton, Ole and Mary (Marie).61

Sometime between the birth of Clara in 1884 and January of 1886, Ole and Marit, with there family moved to a farm in Pleasant Valley. It was originally believed that they had purchased this farm but further research showed that it was not purchased by them until 10 years later. This is the farm and the house that was described in "Oscar Melvin Hagen, Birth to Marriage". The farm is the SW quarter of the NW quarter of Section 28 in Leon Township, Monroe, WI. It was 40 acres rented from John Gilliland.62

As of 1895, he was also known as Ole O. Hagen.63

Ole as head of household appeared on the census of 1895 Leon, Monroe, WI; This census only shows surname "Hagen" and indicates that there were 4 males and 7 females living in the household. This would be Ole, his wife, Mary, 3 sons and 6 daughters. This would be correct for Ole's family and this is the first time that research has shown that Ole has used the surname Hagen.63

On 12 Feb 1896, Ole O. Hagen purchased the farm he was renting from John H. Gilliland. The location of this farm is listed above. Ole paid $400.00 for the 40 acres. He paid down $250.00 and mortgaged the rest with the seller. Ole Olsen Toftehagen/Oleson/O. Hagen had become a property owner.64

Merritt Gilbertson, son of Alma Hagen Gilbertson, gave me some of the facts about the farm. He lived on the farm from his birth until he was about 9 years old.

"The house had 4 rooms when I lived there. I was born in 1912 and don't remember much until I was older but there were 2 rooms downstairs, a kitchen and a sort of living room. There were two bedrooms upstairs that were the same size as the rooms downstairs so they were big bedrooms. In addition to the house there was a barn and a chicken coop. There were about 8 or 9 cows, some chickens, and a pair of horses. The hoses name's were Tom and Floss. They grew mostly oats on the farm and a little tobacco. We spoke Norwegian most of the time and as I remember it Grandpa Ole did not speak English very well at all. Grandpa was a nice man but the last year that I knew him best he was quite ill. I do remember him helping Uncle Tony shock grain. I also remember that he always had peppermint candy and sometimes he would give me some."

He and Marit Anderson appeared on the census of 1900 Leon, Monroe, WI; This is the first census that I know of where he used the full name "Ole O. Hagen". His age at last birthday is shown as 58, his year of birth as 1841 and his occupation as farmer. The farm is mortgaged. His wife is listed as Mary and that they have been married for 26 years. The children living at home are Oscar, age 14; Emma age 11; and Alma age 7.65

He and Marit Anderson appeared on the census of 1910 Leon, Monroe, WI; The 1910 census shows that Ole is still Ole O. Hagen. His wife is listed as Mary K. He notes on this census that he cannot read or write English. His occupation is still farmer and he now owns his farm free of mortgage. The children living at home are Emma age 20 and Alma age 17.
In addition, Maria (Maggie) and her two children also appear as members of the family. Maria married Ole Peterson in 1901 and he died in 1908. Maria with her two children, Myrtle A. and Palmer E. returned to live with her parents.66

Ole O. Hagen, under the name of Ole Olson, was naturalized on 18 Jun 1913 Circuit Court, Sparta, Monroe, WI. Why he petitioned and became naturalized under the name of Ole Olson, will probably never be known. Especially after he had been using the name of Ole O. Hagen for so many years and the fact that there is a place on the formal papers for a change of name. The reason may have been his inability to read or write English, or, was it because he made his intention in 1876 to become a citizen under the name of Ole Olson. Perhaps he had to be naturalized under the same name as his intention, but, why didn't he take advantage of the change of name? 67

Here are two memories of Grandfather Ole O. Hagen

Memo -- By Adeline Hagen Gilner- written in 1994

"I was 5 years old when Grandpa died. He always sat in his rocking chair facing the window to the road. His big long beard hung down on his chest. He always had a dish of white peppermint candy on a little stand beside his chair. Norma was 3, I was 5 and Wen was a baby. Norma and I would stand and look at the candy but didn't dare touch it or Mother would probably laid us out cold. After we stood staring at it for awhile, Grandpa would say, 'would you like some candy.' Did we smile then. I can remember it like yesterday and see him setting there. Uncle Albert looked just like him when he got older."

(Researcher notes -- Adeline was actually 8 years old when Grandpa Ole Hagen died.)

Memo -- By Everett Hagen 2/6/95

"I do remember Grandfather Ole. I think I was about 4 or 5 when I and some member of my family -- I can't remember who was with me to the old Hagen farm. Grandfather was living on the old Hagen farm, it was small. Palmer Peterson was there at the time too. Grandfather had a long beard and he always had some peppermint candy in the candy jar. I do not know if Grandpa had any brothers or sisters in 1995."

Marit Anderson was born on 23 Oct 1852. She died on 4 Jul 1911 Leon, Monroe, WI, at age 58.

In 1870 or 1871, Ole Olsen Toftehagen, AKA Ole O. Hagen, was living in Monroe county, WI. He sent $100.00 to his brother, Lars Olsen Toftehagen in Sør Fron, Oppland, Norway. Lars apparently used that money to send his two oldest sons, Ole and Iver Larsen, to America. The emigration record for Ole appears below. It is taken from the emigration records found on the University of Bergen Webpage. The records have been translated for this report.

Ole Larsen Toftehagen, male, left the port of Kristiana (Oslo), 26 May 1871 on board the ship, Hero. His age is19, a laborer and unmarried. His parish is Sør Fron and his destination is Sparta.

An article was written for the local newspaper on the life of Ole Larsen from his leaving Norway to his retirement years. The article was written about 1930. It was given to me by Cheryl Coquoz, my co-researcher and a descendant of Ole Larson.

Ole Larson Has Interesting Life Story

In May of the year 1871, two young men set out from Gudbrandsdalen, (Gudbrandsdalen means Gudbrands Valley. The Tofte farms were located in this valley.) Norway, on the long journey to the new world. The young men were Ole Larson, age 20, and his brother, Iver, age 18. The first stage of their journey took them to Christiana (now called Oslo) ; a boat trip across the North Sea was followed by the fastest ride of their lives on a train to smoky, gray Liverpool. They were whizzed along, catching but brief glimpses of the pretty countryside where trimmed, thorny hedges were the only fences.
In Liverpool the boys spent four days awaiting the sailing of their boat. They were sick days for Ole, who found the coal smoke almost unbearable, but they were interesting days too. The big smoke blackened city held many new sights for the young men. There they saw a donkey for the first time; there too they saw the biggest horses. These great draft horses were used to pull freight cars from the boats to the depot. The cars ran on rails and the horses were driven with only one line. Every horse wore leather pads on their knees to protect them if they fell while straining at their heavy loads.
Seasickness failed to touch the boys. Clean ocean breezes cleared up their lungs of Liverpool smoke and they thoroughly enjoyed the seven day crossing to New York. From New York they traveled by train to Chicago., thence by boat to Milwaukee and from there to Sparta on the train. At Sparta they found a man who was driving some cattle out this way and they followed along to Leon. By chance, in Leon they came across the man who was later to become Ole’s father-in-law, Magnus Swenson. Mr. Swenson took the boys to Pleasant Valley where dwelt their uncle.
( Researcher note: Although they do not mention him by name, the only uncle that they had in America was Ole Olsen Toftehagen, later known as Ole O. Hagen) This uncle had sent money to the old country for traveling expenses. Arrival in Pleasant Valley found each of the boys in debt the seemingly great amount of 50 dollars. They immediately set to work to pay back this passage money.
The next year the two Larson boys worked for Mackail Darm, a farmer on the Bangor prairie. For ten days they bound wheat. That was before the time of the present day binder. On this particular farm the owner, Mr. Darm, drove the reaper. Three horses were used on the reaper and the teams were changed at noon. Fields were divided into stations. Each worker had a station. The worker was to follow the reaper over his allotted distance, or station, and rake together and bind the bundles of grain. On the last afternoon, Mr. Darm told the Larson boys and a third worker named ‘Manny’ Wakeman that they were excellent workmen but there never was a man that could keep ahead of him and his reaper when he tried to catch them. Thus a race was begun. The young men were expert at binding and how they did work that afternoon. At five o’clock, Mr. Darm gave up. He had failed to catch them and his horses were so ‘all in’ they shook like a leaf. The story of that afternoon’s work spread round a bout the country side and some time thereafter became a sort of legend to be repeated at country store gatherings on winter evenings.

In two years time the boys had paid their passage money back and also earned enough to send for their father, their brother and a sister from Norway. Their mother had died during these two years.
(Research note: Embjor, their mother,  died  10 Dec 1872 on the Tofte farm, Sor Fron Parish, Oppland, Norway, at age 49.
A few years after the arrival of the rest of the family, the father and son bought a farm at the upper end of one of the branches of Pleasant Valley from a Mr. Mullen. There was 112 acres in the farm; three acres only were cleared. The one building was a log shanty half of which was in the hillside. The men went right at the hard work of grubbing and clearing their land.
When the day’s work was done the young people of the valley had jolly time going from house to house to parties. Out of this gayety developed the romance of Amanda Swenson and Ole Larson. And on the 13th day of December, 1878, they were united in marriage at the Fish Creek Ridge church. The big church wedding was followed by a day and a night of dancing and feasting at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. And Mrs. Magnus Swenson. The Swenson farm is just back of the Chet Green farm of today.
(Researcher notes: Oscar and Frances Hagen rented this farm in about 1914. Both Norma Hagen/ Christianson and Wendell Hagen were born on the Swenson farm.) The buildings are still standing but no one lives there. As it was near the Christmas holiday season, some of the guests came to the wedding party masked as was the old country custom.
Ole bought out his father and brother’s share in the Larson farm and the young couple went to live there. By this time there was a house and a small barn on the place. To be near a big spring of sparkling cold water the farm buildings were in the valley although most of the farm lay on the ridge.
Some years later the spring nearly dried up without any apparent reason. Crowley, the pump man from Sparta, was engaged to dig a well, but before the well was finished by some miracle the spring became strong again and continues so to this day.
The four Larson children that immigrated from Norway in the 70’s are all still living. Iver, the brother mentioned before, lives on his farm on Thompson Ridge out of Portland.
Here on this farm the six Larson children were born. They attended the little Pleasant Valley school. Sunday school was also held in the school house. A Mrs. Barbara McCabe, wife of John McCabe, was one of the teachers. The McCabe’s lived on the farm now owned by C. J. Justin.
Mr. Larson recalls an amusing anecdote of Doc Jones, grandfather of the present Dr. Jones. One day Mr. Larson was driving along while just ahead of him on an old gray horse was Doc Jones. As the Jones’ horse passed a house a woman ran out waving to catch the rider’s attention. In a minute the trouble was found to be a thumb out of joint. Doc Jones, a gruff old fellow, took a firm hold of the thumb, said "giddap." The woman screamed but the thumb had snapped back into joint. Mr. Jones stopped only to remark, "Now go back in the house and wash your dishes."
The years filled with the joys and the cares of rearing a family and the hard work and the pleasure a farmer finds in tilling the soil, sped quickly past. It seemed but a short time until the children were grown up and gone away from home and in 1911, Mr. And Mrs. Larson rented their farm and moved to Leon. They owned a house in the village. This they remodeled and it is still the Larson home. The Pleasant Valley farm was later sold to John Vestreng who still owns it.
In 1925 Mrs. Larson died after a long illness and eight years of total blindness. Sixteen years ago, Mr. Larson put in a year of sickness. Two operations, typhoid fever and pleurisy caused a long hard fight for health. Six weeks were spent in a La Crosse hospital. At one time relatives were called, thinking that his days were numbered but after a 14 month battle, Mr. Larson regained his strength and is today a quick moving slender man for his years. He divides his time between his village home and the home of his five children who all live within easy reach. Mr. Larson has 26 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Recently a big family picnic was staged as celebration of Mr. Larson’s eightieth birthday.

(Researcher note: My father attended the Pleasant Valley rural school. I don't know how many years he went but he told my wife, Virginia Snowberger Hagen, -- that one fall I went to school and one of the girls who had been in my class the previous year was the teacher. I figured I knew as much as she did so I didn't go back.)

Oscar was confirmed November 11, 1900 in the Fish Creek Ridge Norwegian Lutheran Church. The instruction was in Norwegian. He did, however, know English by this time because he had learned it when he went to public school. The grades at his confirmation was excellent and very good.

My father, Oscar Hagen met Frances Berlin in Leon, WI. Louie Berlin (Mother's brother) had come from Ludington, WI and rented a farm near Leon in about 1910. Mother came along to keep house for him and brought their brother Archie, (then age 12). My father told my wife, Virginia Snowberger Hagen,

I went to a dance one night in Leon with another girl and saw Frank (my father's nickname for my mother,) at the dance. I dumped the other girl and took Frank home (it was her home not his) that night and never let her out of my sight again.

They were married April 3, 1912 in Winona, MN. Many young people did that in those days. You could take the train from Sparta to Winona, get your license (no waiting period) get married and take the train back to Sparta. Besides it was a beautiful ride from La Crosse to Winona along the Mississippi River.
They worked and stayed at Clyde and Clara Richardsons (Clara was Dad's sister) for awhile and then rented the Burnett farm just before Adeline was born.83,82
