Notes for Winifred NUNN
The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900, the Thurtell Family
History done about 1963, and the History of the Thurtell Family done by
Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, all in possession of Susan Persia
Thurtell Miller show Winifred's maiden name was Woods. Additional
information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows her maiden name was
actually Nunn.
Records of St. Ethelreda Church, Norwich, Norfolk, England, show Winifred
Nunn, daughter of Thomas Nunn and his wife Wennefrat, was christened
there March 15, 1740, according to the IGI.
See notes under Winifred and James Thurtell's son, John Thurtell.
Winifred Nunn Thurtell is buried at Blundeston, and her tomb shows,
Winifred, 1st wife of James, died November 28, 1795, age 55 years.
The information from Peter Murray shows that Winifred Nunn married James
Thirtell on December 7, 1758, according to the records at St. Etheldreda
Church, Norwich, Norfolk, England. This was the same church where she
had been christened on March 15, 1740. She died November 28, 1795, aged
55 and is buried inside the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, in Blundeston,
Suffolk County, England. Her husband James Thirtell (afterwards spelled
Thurtell) was born in 1737 or 1738 and died 19 Jan 1801 aged 63, buried
with both his wives in the church at Blundeston. After the death of
Winifred, he had married Elizabeth Atkinson (formerly Woods?) who
outlived her husband and died 15 June 1823 aged 75, buried with him at
Blundeston. James and Winifred Thurtell at first lived in or near
Norwich, but settled about 1775, or shortly before, at White House Farm,
Flixton, Suffolk County, England. The parishes of Blundeston and Flixton
had been amalgamated ever since the great hurricane of 1703 had destroyed
the church in Flixton, and after settling there the Thurtell family seem
to have been among the most prominent parishioners. James and Winifred
Thurtell had 21 or 23 children according to family tradition, and record
has been found of 16, at least 9 of whom survived to adulthood.
