Thurtell and Related Families
Notes for Horace Clark THURTELL
The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900 and the History of
the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, both in the
possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller, show Horace Thurtell married
in South Africa and had children, but no other information was known
about them.
The IGI file at the LDS Family History Center shows Horace Clark
Thurtell, son of Walter Thurtell and Honor Clark, was christened June 27,
1824, at Wells Next the Sea, Independent, Norfolk, England (Batch
C075291).
Information was received from Peter Murray in 1997, which incorporated
information from the "Thurtell Pedigree" compiled by Herbert and Ada
Murray in South Africa about 1930-32 and from a chart provided by
Clifford Thurtell of Victoria, British Columbia.
Horace Clarke Thurtell, who emigrated to South Africa and founded a large
family there, appears in the account of the Thurtell family in England as
the second son (and the only one to have issue) of Walter Thurtell of
Ormsby House, Sutton, Surrey. The family of Horace Thurtell was one of
two branches of the Thurtell family to settle in South Africa. The
family of Edward Goddard Thurtell emigrated somewhat later than Horace.
In addition the branch of Alfred Thurtell Murray migrated even earlier to
South Africa after taking the name Murray.
Horace Clark Thurtell was the first to establish the surname Thurtell in
South Africa. He was born in about January 1824 and was baptised June
27, 1824, at Wells Next the Sea Independent Church, Norfolk. He
emigrated to the Cape of Good Hope prior to his marriage and settled on a
farm near Willowmore, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. He married, in
1851, Gertrude Emma Pitout (or Elizabeth Gertrude Pitout), and they left
many descendants in South Africa.
Information received from Michael Owen Thurtell in 1998 shows that Horace
Clark Thurtell was a retired farmer when he died at age 77 years, 6
months, on June 16, 1901, at Willowmore, South Africa.
