Thurtell and Related Families
Notes for Edward BROWNE
The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900 and the History of
the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968 show that
Edward Browne married Dods Phild (?) and had two children: Mary -
married Wylie, and Annie - married Wills.
Information received in 1997 from Peter Murray shows that Edward Browne
married Miss Godfrey. An old letter dated August 5, 1864, states:
"Edward Browne, I expect, has joined by this time his brother in Africa.
He first went to Canada. There he was very unfortunate and I believe was
assisted out to Africa where I hope he will be more successful. His wife
has a little property of her own upon which I expect they are subsisting"
(letter Sarah Murray in England to Alexander & Andrea Murray in
California - Sarah was Edward Browne's aunt, and Alexander was his
cousin).
In 1853 Edward Browne and his family were visited in Guelph Township,
Canada, by his aunt Anne Everitt as descrived in her diary: "...drove me
to my nephew Edward Browne's, where I was introduced to my new niece and
her sweet pretty lively son: EB was not at home. Mrs B and her son
returned with us to tea." She mentions more visits to the Brownes while
she was there, but unfortunately no description of Edward Browne.
