Thurtell and Related Families
Notes for George Alfred Everitt MURRAY
The History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about
1968 and the big family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900 show
George Alfred E. Thurtell married Kathleen Dunne and lists their three
oldest children. The rest of the information about him and his
descendants was received from Peter Murray in 1997.
It shows that Dr. George Alfred Everitt Murray, M.B., F.R.C.S., eldest
son of Walter and Annie Murray of Roode Bloem, was born March 18, 1862,
and died in Johannesburg, South Africa, on July 5, 1941. He obtained his
medical training with distinction at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in
London, and returned to South Africa to become a surgeon in Johannesburg,
the first doctor in that pioneer town. He was a founder of Johannesburg
General Hospital and Chief of Surgery there. During the Boer War he and
his wife Kathleen went to England on the hospital ship "Norman" in 1900
and were both invested by Queen Victoria with the Order of St. John of
Jerusalem in recognition of their organization of hospital services
during a critical period of the conflict. Later he became the first
president of the South African Medical Association. He was married in
Graaff Reinet, South Africa, October 8, 1889, to Kathleen Elizabeth Mary
Dunne, "Kit." George and Kathleen (Dunne) Murray had 4 children, all
