Notes for Edward THURTELL

The 1850 U.S. Census for Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin, page 136,
ennumerated September 19, 1850, shows Edward Thurtle as the oldest child
of Edward B. Thurtle and Anna Thurtle. Edward was 7, born in Wisconsin,
and attended school at the time of the census.

The Wisconsin Military Index Card Microfilm for the U.S. Civil War on
file in the U.S. National Archives in Microfilm 559, Number 30 shows
Edward Thurtell was a Private in the 25th Wisconsin Infantry. He is
therefore undoubtedly the E. Thurtell listed in the Roll of Honor Volume
XXVI, Names of Soldiers Who Died in Defense of the Union Interred in the
National Cemeteries, which was published in Washington, DC, originally in
1871. This record shows E. Thurtell, a Private in the 25th Wisconsin
Infantry, died August 27, 1863, and is buried at Mound City National
Cemetery, Illinois, in Section E, Grave 4419, and that his original place
of burial had been in Paducah, Kentucky. This cemetery is located at
Junction - Highways 37 and 51, Mound City, Illinois 62963, 314-260-8691.

Information from the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, 30 West Mifflin Street,
Madison, Wisconsin 53707-7843, e-mail REFDESK@@mail.state.wi.us, shows
that Edward Thurtell was a Private in Company I of the 25th Wisconsin
Infantry. His residence is shown as Hazel Green. He enlisted August 15,
1862, and died August 30, 1863, in Paducah, Kentucky, from disease.

The entry about Ransom B. Folts in a 1901 Grant County, Wisconsin,
biographical record shows his wife's brother, Edward Thurtell, died in
the Civil War.
