Notes for George THURTELL
The History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about
1968 and the family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900 show George
Thurtell died March 16, 1854, at 70. He was married three times. His
first wife, Phoebe, died at age 30. He had one child with Phoebe. He
and his second wife, Elizabeth Jenner, had three children. Elizabeth
died October 17, 1846, at age 60. George and his third wife, Harriet,
had no children.
Information received in 1997 from Peter Murray shows that George Thurtell
was born in 1784 in Flixton and baptised January 17, 1785, in
Blundeston. Three earlier brothers also named George died young,
baptised August 7, 1775, and in 1777 in Blundeston, and in about 1780.
This George Thurtell died March 16, 1854, aged 70. By the terms of his
father's will, proved 1801, income from his father's property at Hempnall
Norfolk was to provide for his upkeep and education until he reached the
age of 21, and afterwards to be sold and the proceeds of the sale to be
divided among the children of James and Winifred Thurtell or their
heirs. George Thurtell inherited his father's leased property in Flixton
Parish, apparently jointly with his brothers. The 1841 and 1851 census
records show him as farmer of 400 acres in that parish, employing 14
outdoor labourers in 1851. He lived at White House, Flixton, and was one
of the three chief constables of the Mutford and Lothingland hundred.
Elsewhere he is stated to have been "of Lodden Hall" (document in Mickle
Collection, Guelph), but this has not been confirmed (although the church
at Lodden apparently has Thurtell graves).
He first was married in Lowestoft on October 21, 1807 (parish records say
October 27, 1807) to Phoebe Cleveland, who died October 29, 1810, aged
30. He was married for the second time in Gunton, Suffolk (also recorded
the same date at Ashby, Suffolk) on January 6, 1814, to Eliza Jenner, who
was born in 1786 and died October 17, 1846, aged 60. He was married for
the third time, before 1851, to Harriet Jenner, who was born at Lound,
Suffolk (sister of Eliza), and who was aged 59 in 1851.
George Thurtell, wives Phoebe and Eliza, and daughters Sarah and Phoebe,
are buried at the church in Blundeston.
