Images in the News. Canadian Illustrated News 1869-1883. The Franco-Prussian War, 1870-1871
The Franco-Prussian War was repoorted in detail by the magazine Canadian Illustrated News. This site presents two articles from the magazine, from July 23rd 1870 and 19th November 1870, and an article on the war, the magazines` coverage of it, and the way public perceptions developed. A section on illustrations reproduces a number of black and white pictures showing events from the war. A search will locate many illustrations of scenes from the war.
Founding and early years of the International Committee of the Red Cross
Survey of the founding and early years of the Red Cross, and its activities in various wars up to 1914. The section on the Franco-Prussian War summarises the work the organisation did with the wounded and prisoners of war. The site also has the text of the "Geneva Convention for the Amelioration of the Conditions of the Wounded in Armies in the Field. Geneva, 22 August 1864."
Information about the Bourbaki Panorama at Luzern in Switzerland. This is a painting 110 metres long and 10 metres high, showing the French Army under Bourbaki crossing into Switzerland in 1871 and being disarmed. It was painted by the Geneva painter Edouard Castres (who witnessed the event as a Red Cross worker) and a team of artists in 1881, was displayed in Geneva until 1889 and from then in Luzern. The Panorama Rotunde has been modernised and now contains a library, museum, cinemas, exhibition areas, etc., and the painting is currently being restored. The whole painting can be viewed on the website as a series of pdf files. German and English-language sections.
The Arrival of Bourbaki`s Army at Les Verrières
The Internment of the First French Army in Switzerland on 1 February 1871. This is an article from the "International Review of the Red Cross " no. 311 (April 1996) about the crossing of Bourbaki`s army into Switzerland. It details the background, the crossing itself and what happened subsequently in Switzerland. It includes the full text (in English) of the agreement drawn up between the French and Swiss at the border that regulated the crossing. Also there are details of the effect of the Franco-Prussian War on the subsequent development of international law concerning war and neutrality. Many sources are listed. English-language site
