- Kevin!
He starred at her, she still looked the same, 16 years had passed and she still was the same. She ran over to him and gave him a hug, just like she'd used to do when they had been kids. He hugged her back. She'd really grown up but she still looked the same, still the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen.
- God you've grown, she smiled.
- So have you, he smiled back.
- Yeah, I can't believe that you recognized me!
- You haven't changed that much.
- There is someone I need to introduce you to, she said and took his hand and showed him the way.
- Kevin! A little girl screamed and ran up to him.
- Hanna! Mariah's voice went a bit hard, Where's your manners?
- Sorry, can I have your autograph?
- Sure, Kevin smiled.
- Kevin, this is Hanna and Kevin.
Kevin gave the pad back to the girl and lookd up. A boy where standing beside Mariah.
- Kevin, he smiled and shook the boy's hand and then the girl's too.
- Who's this?
- Nick, said Kevin and looked at his friend, this is Mariah, a girl I met at my father's summer camp in 1983 this is Hanna and Kevin.
- Hi, he smiled.
- Do you and B-ROK wanna do me a favor?
- Sure.
- If it's okay, can you take these kids and play with them, I need to talk to Mariah.
Mariah nodded.
- Why not, come on! Nick took the girl's hand, We got some computers back here, are you coming Kevin?
- Yeah! The boy hurried after them.
Kevin turned to Mariah.
- 16 years, what's happen?
- Well, I've done some stupid things, some good things, the usual I guess. How about you then?
- Well, I guess the same as you, and this is one of the good things.
- It really is.
- How did you find me?
- Well, actually it was the other way. Hanna and Kevin love your music so when you finally got here I decided to let them go on your concert.
- What's your connection to them?
- Hanna and Kevin are my kids, they sat down beside each other.
- Your kids...
Kevin was shocked. She had two kids, probably a husband too... He looked at her hand, nope, no ring.
- I got pregnant when I was 16, that were Hanna, and when I was 18, Kevin. He's named after you...
- Your kids...
- Yeah, people do reproduce you know...
- Yeah but it's you! I mean, you're Mariah, you are still then in my eyes.
- Well, I kind of grown, and so have you. I'm not ten, and you're not eleven anymore.
- But still... Hold on, Kevin is named after me?
- Yeah, I never forgot you. You always stood up for me when those guys started to pick on me and all that.
- But still...
- Kevin, you were my first love, and he looked so much like you so I really didn't care what Thomas said.
- Thomas?
- Their father. He wanted him to be Thomas Jr., she shook her head.
- I remember that, you never liked that Jr. thing.
- Mm, she gave him a hug, to you remember that summer?
- Better than any summer, I'll never forget it... I thought you had though...
- I never did and never will, I remember that chestnut that you loved so much... what was it called now... Puma.
- Puma...
--- Flashback June 1983 ---
- Are you sure Kev?
- Of course I am, he smiled and helped her up on Puma, she's really nice.
- If I fall I'm gonna kill you, just so you know.
- You won't fall of her.
- How can you be so sure about that?
- Cause, he smiled and started walking beside the horse, she won't throw you off.
- Iii!
- Shh! Don't scream.
- I wasn't screaming.
- Oh no, what was that then?
- I just... okay I screamed. Happy?
- Very, he smiled.
Puma walked slowly beside Kevin with Mariah on her back. Kevin petted her and kept on talking to Mariah. She was the only girl on the camp this year and the guys picked on her. He liked her, and his father had given him orders to keep her company, not that he wouldn't have done that anyway. Sure the boys did more stuff that he liked bud Mariah tried. But she really was good at basketball. She'd already beaten him eight times of ten, one to one.
--- Back in the present ---
- I got a picture of you and her somewhere, smiled Mariah and picked up her wallet, um... here!
- You took that the first day I tried to learn you horseback riding, he smiled.
- Yeah, you were so cute back then.
- And I'm not anymore?
- No, now you're sexy, she smiled.
- Well you aren't a little girl anymore.
- I know, she leaned her head at his shoulder, you know what feels weird?
- What? He putted his arm around her.
- I hate that Jr. thing and still I went and found a guy that looked about the same as you the first thing I did and named my son Kevin.
- What?
- Thomas looks like you, but he got black hair and brown eyes, and he's a bit shorter, but still very close.
- Still going out with him?
- No, that's been over for a long time, he left when Hanna was three and Kevin was one.
- So you had to take care of the kids all by yourself?
- Yeah, but I had my parents, they helped me a lot. I work with computers now, I didn't do so bad anyway.
- Do me a favor.
- What?
- Don't start talking about megabyte and stuff like that, I don't understand anything when it comes to stuff like that...
- Promise, she smiled, How is it with you now? Girlfriend, or boyfriend?
- What?
- Hey, I don't know if you're gay, just so you know it. I mean there's nothing wrong with it anyway, I just wondered.
- Well I'm not gay, an no, no girlfriend at all.
- How come?
- Well in this line of work it isn't very easy, you really don't get enough time before you go to the next city.
- Don't you spend the night in one place at least?
- Okaaay...
- No really...
- We don't do one-night stands.
He looked at her, this was the shy girl that he'd fallen in love with that summer 1983, he never thought that she'd be like this. But then he'd never thought that he'd ever again when he turned 16...
- Really? I mean, you really got the opportunity...
- It's not right, ha said still not believein that this was the Mariah that he remembered.
- Well, it depends, if both persons are okay with it, then it's okay.
- Yeah, but I mean... It would feel wrong, leaving that girl behind then and... In my opinion it's wrong, okay?
- Absolutely, you always had this really unnatural high moral...
- What!
- Yeah, like you refused to steal those candy-bars in the store...
- You still remember that...
- Yeah...
--- Flashback July 1983 ---
- You so will not do that Mariah.
- Don't be such a baby Kevin, it's just a candy bar.
- Yeah, so leave it then.
- It's a store, they won't go insane if they lose one...
- Maybe not Maya, but it's wrong.
- You've been whining about this for like five minutes now, do you mind?
- Yes I mind! You will not take that candy bar!
- All right! I won't.
- Good, then let's go!
- Okay, Mariah went away from the store with him.
She looked at him, a bit angry.
- Why not?
- It's wrong, he said shortly.
- But still, sometimes it's okay to do something wrong.
- No it isn't.
- Yes it is, why do you haft to do everything correctly all the time?
- Cause, he looked at her, if I do it comes out right.
- You're really a perfectionist you know that.
- Well, rather that than a thief.
- Do you wanna fight me? I can take you down right here, right now! She stopped and looked at him.
- We both know you can't, so stop it Mariah, it's no use.
- You really can be stubborn sometimes, she smiled.
--- Back in the present ---
- I still think that I could have taken you down, she smiled.
- You never could and never will, he smiled back.
- Yes I did, she mumbled and looked him in the eyes, swear that you really didn't think that I could take you down.
- I swear, he smiled, not then, not now, not ever.
- You just wait, when you're old I'll come, and then we'll see how that works out, women live longer than men you know.
- Yeah, with like two years, do you really think that you'd be able to find me then? And at like the age of hundred?
- Maybe, a Backstreet Boy really don't get forgotten, not if I can decide that anyway... You know, it's been 16 years, a lot of stuff has happened and I still think about you as my best friend and my first love.
- Well, that's because I still am! I wouldn't hurt you, you got to understand that...
- Yeah, but still, 16 years, it's like eternity.
- It felt like an eternety.
- It sure did...
- You don't have a boyfriend or something?
- Nope, who would want a 26-year-old with two kids?
- I would, he looked at her.
- You only say that to make me feel better, she smiled and kissed him on the cheek.
- I really mean it.
- No you don't, she said and looked him in the eyes, you can have anyone you want, and you just can't like me in that way anymore.
- I always did, it just grew to something different as the years went on.
- Many things changes Kevin, and time won't heal all the wounds you get.
- I know that, but I really mean it, I still love you, I always did.
- I always loved you to, but not... I'm lying to my self right now so I'll just tell you the truth... I still do.
- So why can't you understand that I really would like you to be by my side?
- And how about Hanna and Kevin.
- I'd look at them as if they were my own kids.
- I knew you'd say that, she smiled, but Kev...
- I really don't understand what's the problem, he stroke her dirty blond hair.
- I agree that they need a father, but Kev, you can't be that one, you travel al the time and you'd never be home...
- I... I wish I could say that I'd leave the band but...
- Thank you, she whispered, for not saying it.
- But please Maya, you know I love you, I never forgot about you...
- We were ten and eleven years old, we are 26 and 27 years old now, nothing's like it was anymore.
- I remember when my mother said it was just a puppy love, if it was then I guess that it's still here, I still love you Mariah.
- And I still love you...
- Then please, give it a try.
- I wish that I could do that but, she bit her lip.
"I don't want to do this" she thought "I love him, but still..."
- I can't.
- You know, he said, I'd never leave you, not if I had a choice. But I really love my job and I can't leave it.
- I know, and I'm not asking you to. You just haft to understand that I love you but I can't...
- Look here, he looked her in the eyes, Mariah Duncan, I've loved you for 16 years, I never stopped loving you. Sure I never told anyone, I was close to marry Beth once, but I never stopped lovin you.
- And I got two kids by someone that I fell in love with because he looked a lot like you and sounded like you, but I never stoppd loving you anyway.
- And then why are you saying no to my suggestion?
- I don't know, she smiled and kissed him, so I won't do that anymore.
- Good, he smiled.
--- Flashback August 1983 ---
- I'll never forget you, she said and hugged him.
- And I won't forget you either, he kissed her on the cheek.
- I don't want to leave.
- I don't want you to...
- Someday we'll meet each other again, and then it will be different.
- And we'll never let anyone else tear us apart.
- Bye Kevin, she gave him one last kiss and went to the car where her father was waiting.
- Bye Mariah, he looked at her one last time before she got in to the car.
They were going to meet each other again, he knew it, and so did she.
THE END!
