Moriarty Farmhouse, Ventry, Co. Kerry

At the present time (April 1999) the Moriary Farmhouse in Rahanane West, Ventry, County Kerry, Ireland is a Bed and Breakfast for tourist staying in the Dingle area. The Current operators of the B & B are Ted and Bridie Moriarty. The following history of the farmhouse was sent by Mr. Ted Moriarty for the interest of any Malone's and to any of the other family names mentioned.

"I have info that might be of interest to you. As you know I live in Rahanane West. All of the land at Rahanane West (299 acres) was in my ancestors (Moriarty) possession since the 13th century. We were as tenants to the Knights of Kerry and later to Lord Ventry until we got full freehold possession of it in the 1920's. There were 13 other houses (families) at Rahanane West and these people were as servants to my ancestors working on the land and in the Big House as it was called then." "These people had different backgrounds, some had come looking for work, some were evicted from other places maybe for not having the money to pay the exorbitant rent imposed by heartless Anglo Irish Landlords and some were on the run from the oppressive English law having been involved in uprisings etc." "My great great great grandfather Old taedy as he was known allowed them to build their houses and he gave each family a small piece of land to grow their vegetables. The families which I have listed from 1825 to 1850 are as follows: William Malone, Maurice Curran, John Devane, James Kennedy, John Connor, James Connor, Peter Shea, Mary McKenna, Ellen Beien, Patrick McKenna, Maurice Shea, Patrick Curran, Margaret Cahalane, and Honoria Connor. Most of these families or the children from these families emigrated to the USA from the mid 1800's onward." - Mr. Ted Moriarty
