Bl.Charles Spinola

Missionary to China who died a martyr's death during the Great Martyrdom of Nagasaki on 10
September, 1622.

His companion was Bl. Sebastian Kimura, S.J., the first Japanese to be ordained and the cousin
of Bl. Leonard Kimura, S.J.

Around this time 87 Jesuits were martyred after enduring imprisonment and terrible torture.
Charles had entered Japan to assist the Christians during this frightful "Great Persecution under
emperor Iycyasu. He eluded priest hunters for three years but was finally captured and brought
to a prison near Nagasaki.
After four years of this Charles was taken to Nagasaki and put to death by slow fire.
