St.Philip Evans |
 |
English
1645-1679
Belonged to the English mission and worked in southern Wales for 40
years. There he became
known for his zeal and charity and enjoyed great popularity and success.
Though he was
especially sought after by those behind the Titus Oates plot, Philip
proved himself fearless.
Over and above the usual 50 pounds for a any Jesuit, 200 more were
offered for Philip. Instead
of fleeing the country, he stayed to serve the Catholics in Wales and
was eventually caught.
Refusing, of course, to take the oath of supremacy which recognized
the king as supreme in all
religious matters, he was imprisoned and hanged.
