A flower gets water and nutrients from the soil through its roots.  This food passes through the stem into the leaves and the head of the flower.  A new leaf is called a bud before it opens out.

The centre of the flower is called the stigma.  The ovary is inside the stigma.  Long, thin stamens grow all around the stigma.  The top of a stamen is called the anther.  Anthers produce a fine dust called pollen.  The stigma and stamens are surrounded by colourful petals.
