KING MIDAS
Geraldine McCaughrean
Greek Myths, Heinemann New Windmills (1992)
Before Reading
In your group, make up a story that includes the following words:
You will tell your story to the rest of the class, so make sure you practise telling it!
After Reading
- In your group, make a list of ten questions to test a reader’s
understanding of the story.
- Do not ask simple questions such as "What is the king’s name?"
- Do not ask YES/NO questions (e.g. "Is King Midas a greedy man?")
- Decide
whether you want to use the present (Does…?/Is…?) or the past (Did…? Was…?) tense. Use only that tense in your questions. (Do not mix tenses!)
- Ask intelligent questions that will force the reader to search for information or think carefully.
- Be careful with the grammar of your questions!
- Design a vocabulary task for the reader. For example, you could have a list of words/phrases and a list of jumbled definitions. The reader’s task would be to match them. (You need to refer to page numbers and you must give accurate definitions.)
