Quite simply, people have different a ....s. Howard Gardner, an American psychologist, called these different abilities "multiple intelligences". Gardner identified seven intelligences: linguistic; musical; .....................; spatial; bodily-kinaesthetic; ..................; and intrapersonal. Three others are sometimes included: naturalistic; spiritual; and existential.
Most people are strong in just a few of these areas. For example, a linguistically and musically intelligent person would find languages and fairly easy but might have problems with Maths, map-reading and PE.
Other psychologists or teachers have taken Gardners theory and used it to create a list of "learning styles". In other words, they believe that different people learn in different ways. For example, one student might find pictures and diagrams very helpful for remembering things whereas another might prefer to do things with their hands or by moving around.
