SUMITRA'S STORY, Rukshana Smith
DRAMATISING A SCENE
In your group, choose one of the following scenes from the novel and dramatise it. You need to:
- discuss what happens in the scene and how it can best be presented as drama
- write a script (you may decide to change it after you do a rehearsal)
- agree who plays each role (you will probably also need a director, someone who can judge the acting and help others improve it)
- rehearse the scene – aim for perfection (ideally, you should not need a script in your hand)
- perform the scene in front of the class (and a video camera?)
SCENES TO CHOOSE FROM
- Bap and Sumitra visit Mr Sanghvi’s shop in Kampala (Chapter 1). [Bap; Sumitra; Talika]
- Sumitra’s first day at school in London (Chapter 4). [Sumitra; Miss Watkins; Hilary; Headmaster]
- Maria and Sumitra get to know each other (Chapter 4). [Sumitra; Maria]
- Sumitra is offered the Saturday job (Chapter 8). [Sumitra; Mike; Jean; Rita; Bap]
- Any other scene of your choice (provided that it is first approved by your teacher)
