AS AND A2

Aims

The course is designed:

. to encourage students to develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of the foreign language from a variety of registers

.to enable students to communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in the foreign language through both the spokent and written word, using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language

. to increase their sensitivity to language and language learning

. to develop critical insights into, and contact with, the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries or communtities where the foreign language is spoken

. to develop positive attitudes to foreign language learning

. to provide a suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of the foreign language

. to provide a sufficient basis for the further study of foreign languages at degree level or equivalent

. to provide a coherent, satisfyign and worthwhile course of study for students who do not progress to further study in the subject

Topics

Advanced Subsidiary

(a) Leisure, tourism and travel, sport, hobbies, entertainment with specific reference to France and other French-speaking countries as appropriate

(b) School, Further Education, Higher Education, training and careers with specific reference to France and other French speaking countries as appropriate

(c) Problems of young people, relationships, gender issues, drugs, Aids, with specific reference to France and other French speaking countries as appropriate.

Advanced Level

All the AS topics as well as the following:

(d) Contemporary France and other French speaking countries, including current affairs, EU, world of work, employment/unemployment, immigration

(e) Media, including newspapers, radio and television, advertising, new media, with specific reference to France and other French speaking countries as appropriate

(f) Environmental Issues, including energy, conservation, pollution, transport, with specific reference to France and other French speaking countries as appropriate

Key Skills

Key skills are integral to the study of AS/AL French, and a number of these Key Skills may be assessed through the course content and the related scheme of assessment as defined in the specification. In particular, candidates may demonstrate their ability to fulfil aspects of each of the following Key Skills, normally at Level 3:

Communication
Information Technology
Improving Own Learning and Performance
Working With Others
 
NB: Candidates cannot gather evidence for their Key Skills portfolio in Communication as such - communication must be in English or Welsh

Assessments (WJEC)

AS

FR1 Oral (12-14 minutes) (in April/May with external examiner)
FR2 Listening and Responding (1 hour & 30 minutes)
FR3 Reading and Responding (1 hour & 30 minutes)

Candidates may sit these 3 components in May/June of the first year of study. Alternatively, some or all of these components can be sat in January or May/June of the second year. FR2 and FR3 are sat together for a duration of 3 hours (morning session). FR1 can only be sat in the May/June exam session.

A2

FR4 Oral (15-20 minutes) (in April/May with external examiner)
FR5 Cultural Studies Option (Independent project)
FR6 Listening, Reading and Responding (3 hours)

NB: Dictionaries will not be allowed in any external assessment

The better result will be used in the final award
A candidate may, however, retake the whole qualification more than once
Individual assessment results, prior to certification for a qualification, have a shelf-life limited only by the shelf life of the qualification.
