The Rev. Phillip Mulkey was born near Halifax, N.C. in 1732 and was probably the brother of Jonathan Mulkey who witnessed a will in 1736. In 1757 Rev. Phillip Mulkey organized the famous Sandy Creek Baptist Church on Deep River. In 1760 he carried several members of the Church with him to Little River in South Carolina where they organized another Church. From there Rev. Mulkey went to Georgia where he died. His son, Rev. Jonathan Mulkey was a famous pioneer churchman on the Watauga in East Tennessee in 1787. Jonathan had a son, Rev. Phillip Mulkey, who was famous in South East Kentucky and who with his family settled in Mulkeytown, Illinois, which was named for him and where he died.
