THE COURSE UNIT 1 The three outcomes for Unit 1 are: Outcome 1 Assessment task Informal Conversation or Reply to a personal letter/fax/email. The student is expected to respond in Maltese. If an oral presentation is selected for Outcome 1, a written task should be selected for Outcome 3. Outcome 2 Assessment task Task A: Listen to spoken text (eg conversation, interviews, broadcasts (Maltese Radio programs), News on TV (SBS)) to obtain information to complete task, notes, charts or tables in Maltese or English. Task B: Read text (extracts, advertisements, letter) to obtain information to complete essay, notes, charts or tables in Maltese or English One of the tasks required for Outcome 2 must be written in Maltese and the other one in English. Outcome 2 Assessment task Read the history of Maltese Migration to Australia and write a summary of the � Beginning of migration to Australia (First settlers and the first group of Maltese in Mackay Queensland) � Maltese in Gallipoli � The Gange episode (Children of Billy Hughes) � Child Migration from Malta � White Australia Policy � Maltese migration after World War 2 Outcome 3 Assessment task Read about the traditional Maltese Cuisine. Present and write a specific recipe and explain the ingredients UNIT 3 Assessment task The three outcomes for Unit 3 are: Outcome 1 Assessment task Maltese History; Write an essay on the impact of the Order of St. John (Knights of Malta) on the Island of Malta. Include the Great Siege and the building of the new city Valletta. Outcome 2 Assessment Task Oral Presentation or Review or Article It is expected that student responds in Maltese. If an oral presentation is selected for Outcome 1 a writtem task should be selected for Outcome 3 and vice-versa. Outcome 3 Assessment Task Conduct a 10-15 minute interviewing a Maltese migrant about his/her personal experiences regarding the two cultures (Maltese and Australian). Prepare at least ten questions and submit them for acceptance/deletion/reviewing by the teacher. The interview may be conducted on tape or video using the Maltese language. UNIT 4 Outcome 1 Assessment Task Journal Entry or Personal Account or Short Story Student should present the above task in Maltese - selecting textx from this website. Outcome 2 Assessment Task Prepare a major project on the history of the Maltese Islands from Prehistory to the present date (in English) not less than 6000 words. Include grahics, pictures, tables and statistical data. Outcome 3 Assessment Task Oral Presentation or Review or Article from The Maltese Herald or/and other Maltese newspaper Write an essay not less than 250 words in Maltese on a chosen topic It is expected that student responds in Maltese. Students must undertake Unit 3 prior to undertaking Unit 4. STUDY SUMMARY LOTE Maltese 2002-2011 Rationale The study of a language other than English contributes to the overall education of students, most particularly in the area of communication, but also in the areas of cross-cultural understanding, intercultural learning, cognitive development, literacy and general knowledge. It provides access to the culture of communities which use the language and promotes understanding of different attitudes and values within the wider Australian community and beyond. The ability to communicate in another language, in conjunction with other skills, may provide opportunities for employment in the fields of interpreting, social services, ethnic affairs, the tourism and hospitality industries, international relations, the arts, commerce, technology, science, education etc. Structure The study is made up of four units, each involving at least 50 hours of scheduled classroom (or internet) instruction. Outcomes Outcomes define what students will know and be able to do as a result of undertaking the study. Outcomes include a summary statement and the key knowledge and skills that underpin them. Only the summary statements of the outcomes have been reproduced below and must be read in conjunction with the key knowledge and skills published in each language study design. Students demonstrate the achievement of the outcomes based on progressive development of skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing through activities and tasks organised around the areas of study. The areas of study in Units 1-4 focus on the areas of study for language, which are made up of the themes and topics, text types, kinds of writing, vocabulary and grammar. They are common to all four units of the study and are published in the study design. They are tailored to the specific qualities of the language being studied.
