The Romanian goverment plans to build a theme park in honour of a national hero - Count Dracula. Tourism minister Matei Dan says Dracula Land will open in summer 2002. It is thought it will be in Transylvania. Mr. Dan says the park will be a trigute to the image of a great Romanian hero. There will be a Dracula Institute at the theme park, which will co-ordinate with the 4,000 Dracula clubs worldwide. An American company is apparently building the park, but is keeping the location secret "to avoid property speculation", the minister says. The myth of Dracula is based on the 15th-centery prince of Vlad, Vlad the Impaler. His war against neighbouring Turks and Hungarians have given him hero status. Outside Romania, Dracula's known for inpaling his victims on wooden stakes. Then Bram Stoker popularised the name Dracula with his 1897 novel. Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction!
