Honor God In His Church

Be Empowered by God’s Spirit

Ephesians

3:14

For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Read Isaiah 45:23 and Romans 14:11. Philippians 2:10. Notice how the command in Genesis 41:43. Bow before your King. If you pray a lot and intensely God will drive you to your knees in prayer.

3:15

Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

This is obviously talking about God’s family into which we are adopted when we receive Jesus Christ as our Saviour as per Romans 8:15 and Ephesians 1:5, predestinated for adoption once we are saved. Notice how someone with dominion over something has the power to name as in Genesis 1:26;2:19. Look at what God says about the names He gives (Isaiah 43:7; 45:4)

3:16

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

The source of all our power is the Holy Spirit. A similar phrase is found in Romans 7:22 & 2 Corinthians 4:16.

Seek God’s Glory

3:20

             Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or    think, according to the power that worketh in us,

              Read Philippians 4:13. We have a foreign power working in us whereas we had another power working in us previously. (Ephesians 2:2). Read 1 John 4:4 and Luke 1:37.

3:21

              Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

               Not only is God’s power limitless but so is His authority through time. It will not only continue forever but will increase for as long. Read Isaiah 9:7.

Live in a Worthy Manner

4:1

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

The Christian’s vocation or job is obeying Christ. The work by which we make a living is almost nothing more than a hobby compared to this.

4:2

With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

God’s people can be hard to get along with and rarely overlook each other’s sins. I imagine if you locked the great 20th century preachers in a room at the peak of their powers like J.Frank Norris, Billy Graham, Jack Hyles, Carl McIntire, John R. Rice, Billy Sunday, and Bob Jones Sr. you’d have blood coming out from under the door in less than 12 hours. But, this verse is not a suggestion, but an order. It’s very hard not to defend yourself, even against another Christian. It takes a lot of grace.

4:3

Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Isn’t this a lot harder than it sounds? Isn’t it true that sometimes, even if you know you’re right and that someone else is wrong or being unreasonable or even childish, that it’s better to just say “I’m sorry” or “I’ll do it” or “It’s my fault” for the sake of peace?

4:4

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

Of course, the one body is the church with Jesus Christ as its head, one Spirit is the spirit that lives in each of us from God, and the hope of our calling is Christ Himself, and the fulfillment of Romans 8:20-24.

4:5

One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

One Lord, the Lord Jesus Christ, one faith, the faith of 1 Timothy 4:1 and 2 Timothy 4:7 that some depart from in the first verse and to which Paul stayed true in the second. The one baptism is obviously that of 1 Corinthians 12:13.

4:6

One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Read Colossians 1:12-18.

Do the Work of Ministry

4:7

But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

We vary in the amount of grace we receive (2 Corinthians 12:5-8) exactly as we vary in the amount of faith we receive (Romans 12:3).

4:11

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Christ gave each of us ability to do something. Each person in here has a gift. What is your gift?

4:12

For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Three things here; perfect the saints, work as ministers, and edify the body of Christ.

4:13

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

All believers are responsible for ministering in some way. None of us are to be a part of this church to be entertained or to make it a social club. We’ve all a need to have a Bible study in our home, or pass out gospel tracts, or to witness at work or at play, to have duties within the church.

4:15

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

We are trusting Christ to achieve what He has planned within us. Our destiny is to become just like Christ. 1 John 3:2
