Boynton class Fighter Escort SDB
Here is an example of the suggested fighter escort ship. It could have been made J1 by sacrificing the cargo space and extra fuel, or perhaps J3 by dropping cargo, extra fuel, and armor.
If you take advantage of the TL13 factor-bump on lasers, dropping back to a factor-8 laser lets you save a power plant factor with minimal loss of oomph, and still leaves three hard points and 2 EP to play with. Given that neither the SDB nor the fighters are jump-capable, the fuel purification could be done without, too, as I recall.
Wouldn't a _Boynton_ class be named after subversive greeting card artists?

I meant "Pappy" Boyington (from the WW2 Black Sheep squadron), but didn't search for the exact spelling before hitting send. You are correct that the spelling I gave could refer to Sandra Boynton the greeting card writer/illustrator.

There is a second bridge which is configured as a figter control bridge. The vessel includes fuel and cargo space to support a brood of fighters on extended patrol, with several extra staterooms for pilots to relax between flights.
