L&R Hartley, Publishers - Q&A (Galleys and Rushes)

Definitions:

Rushes: The first, unedited print of a movie or video scene

Galley Proof: A proof print taken from composed type before page composition to allow for the detection and correction of errors.

Plate proof: A proof taken from composed type after page composition to allow for the detection and correction of errors.

I am having my book converted to Video. Do I get to see the rushes?

The release or public/private exhibition of rushes is the prerogative of the videographer or film maker. In our case, we use our subsidiary company CCA-V Television to transfer books to video or cinematographic film. The policy is that if you appear in any film sequence, you are entitled to see yourself before the film is released. You will also need to sign a Cinematography Model Release Form. This can be downloaded from the CCAV-TV website or emailed to you upon request. If you do not appear in the film you may not be able to view rushes, however this is at the discretion of the videographer or film maker.

I am having my book converted to a Multimedia CDROM. Do I get to pre-view it before release?

If your book is being published under conventional publishing, yes it may be pre-viewed before release. You will be advised when a copy is ready and it may be viewed at any one of our branches or subsidiaries world-wide.

If it is being beta-published we do not normally provide a facility for pre-viewing before release.

I am having my Manuscript published as a book. Do I get progress reports and do I see the galley proofs?

If your book is being published under conventional publishing, yes, you will be sent proofs before printing takes place. You will also receive regular progress reports from each of the departments involved in your book.

If it is being beta-published we do not generally provide progress reports unless there is a foreseeable delay in production. Galleys/proofs are for the use of our type-setting and proof-reading staff only and as most of our authors are first-time writers they often appreciate seeing their book in print for the very first time when they receive their free copy and not in its various stages. In the past we have found that releasing galleys has drastically minimised this event. We have also found that by keeping galleys in-house we can get the finished product to the author much sooner, and this is also appreciated by the majority of first-time writers.

I am having my book converted to an Audio CD. Do I get to hear it before publication?

Our subsidiary company Red Range Radio transfers books to audio CD and the policy is that if you are being recorded speaking, singing or playing an instrument, you are entitled to hear yourself before the audio is released. You will also need to sign an Audio Recording Model Release Form. This can be downloaded from the Red Range Radio website or emailed to you upon request. If you do not appear in the recording in person, then you may not be able to hear the recording before release, however this is at the discretion of the recording studio.

Why?

We have made these decisions out of fairness to all, including our own staff and those of our subsidiary companies, and will not normally compromise these conditions.

Thank you for being so understanding.
