A master mechanic at an airplane-parts factory, and bored with his job, he tried to interest the company in a set of plans for some new innovative hydraulic technology he'd created.  When rebuffed, he used the plans as the basis for his first Beetle armor, turning to crime in hopes of winning the fame, wealth, and thrills denied him at work.  Since that time, Jenkins has been increasingly upset with his failure to achieve success in this career, either.  His original armor has been reworked three times--once with the help of the Tinkerer, once, turning it into the M.A.C.H.-1 armor, with the considerable assistance of Techno, and once more with the help of Techno in his guise as Ogre, turning it into the M.A.C.H.-2 armor.  As M.A.C.H.-1 (the acronym stands for Mobile Armored Cyber-Harness), he was capable of high-speed flight and maneuverability, and had a wide variety of on-board sensors, communications equipment and weaponry, including machine guns and mini-missile launchers.  The M.A.C.H.-2 armor was 47% faster than the M.A.C.H.-1 armor, and had greatly improved reconnaissance, surveillance, and electronic countermeasures capabilities.

While a member of the Thunderbolts, Abner has become increasingly close to Songbird, first breaking her out of her shell, then teaching her how to trust again .After Hawkeye offered to lead the team, Jenkins turned himself in for the murder of Dr. Jared Goulding (in Deadly Foes of Spider-Man #3).   While incarcerated at Seagate Prison, Jenkins managed to quell a riot instigated by Justin Hammer to cover the breakout of a few of his 'employees.'
