Origin: South America: Amazon River. Temperament: Potentially a community fish. Sometimes fights amongst themselves and with other fish, but usually only if provoked. Size: Up to 15cm (6") Temperature: 75-86°F or 24-30°C pH Level: 6.4 to 7.0 Food: Flake food, pellets, peas, algae, lettuce, (most greens), worms, crustaceans, insects. Tank Setup: Needs big tank with plenty of space. If a planted tank, these fish will shred any vegetation! Keep with equally sized fish, so they can defend themselves and will not be eaten - these fish will eat Neon-sized fish. Breeding: Spawning takes place on leaves or angled slate. Fairly difficult. Sexing: Difficult. Mature males sometimes have a bump on their head.. Comments: Potentially a community fish. Avoid keeping this fish with fin nippers, especially tiger barbs. Best kept in a shoal of four or more in a large tank. These fish are fast-growing - a small fish will become a big fish in between six and twelve months. |
