Paracheirodon axelrodi |
Origin: South America: In tributaries of the Orinoco and Rio Negro. Temperament: Active, but a good community fish. Size: Up to 4.5cm (1.8"). Temperature: 75-80°F or 24-27°C pH Level: 6.0 to 6.5 Food: Flake food, pellets, small insects and crustaceans, plant matter. Tank Setup: Keep plenty of plants in the tank. Keep with peaceful, small species. Make sure there is swimming space. Looks better under subdued light, by having some floating plants to filter the light. Breeding: Not difficult. Spawning usually takes place at night or where there is subdued light. Fry hatch in 24-30 hours and are swimming in less than four days. Can be difficult to rear, and can be fed on small nauplii or crushed flake food. Sexing: Almost indistinguishable.. Comments: Generally good community fish, easy to feed and care for. Long lived despite its size. Avoid keeping with considerably larger fish, including Angelfish, as these tend to make a good snack to a hungry or bored bigger fish. |
