Symphysodon discus |
Origin: South America: the Amazon, esp. around Manaus, through to the Rio Negro. Temperament: Generally fairly peaceful. Size: Up to 20cm (8") Temperature: 81-86°F or 27-30°C pH Level: The water composition is extremely important! For this very delicate fish, the water must be slightly acid, perhaps 6.5, and soft. The water must be filtered through peat, or peat must form some of the substrate. Food: Flake food, pellets, plant matter, worms, crustaceans, insects. Tank Setup: Needs a deep, large tank with plenty of swimming space and a fair bit of vegetation, especially large leaved plants. This fish is best kept in a species tank, or with other South American fish (and no I don't mean pirahnas!). Angelfish tend to make a good tank companion. Also, it is sometimes recommended to paint the back and sides of the tank black to give Discus more security. Breeding: Breeding these fish is arguably difficult! Spawning takes place on a cleaned rock or leaf, and the eggs hatch in around 2 days. After hatching they hang from the rock/leaf for another 2-3 days before they are free swimming and attach themselves to the parent's side where they feed from mucus secreted through the parent's skin. In another few days they will take small live food, and will become independent. Sexing: Unclear. Comments: Certainly not recommended for the beginner, better handled by the dedicated and experienced, due to the fish's demanding nature. |
